Biker who did nearly 90mph in a 50mph zone given suspended sentence
3:22pm Friday 23rd November 2012 in News
A motorcyclist has been given a suspended sentence for breaking the speed limit, overtaking vehicles dangerously and failing to stop for police.
Andrew Veness, was on the A24 at Horsham, when he was seen by an unmarked police car riding his 600cc sports motorcycle at 88 miles per hour in a 50 mile an hour limit.
The 23-year-old wouldn't stop when PC Glen McArthur tried to pull him over and rode off at high speeds, leading to a high speed chase before eventually stopping near the Sussex and Surrey border on the A24 and was arrested.
Veness, a tyre and exhaust fitter from Beechwood Drive in Keston, near Bromley in Kent was charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for a police officer and driving without insurance after being arrested on the A24 on July 29 this year.
He appeared at Lewes Crown Court on November 8 and found guilty of all the offences.
He was given a 12 month sentence suspended for two years, 200 hours of unpaid work, 19 sessions of the Think First Programme, a 12 month supervision order, disqualified from driving for 18 months and will have to retake his test. He has also been given a fine of £1,200.
PC McArthur said: "I hope the penalties Veness has been given works to deter others from riding dangerously. We want to ensure people ride safely in our county and will make sure anyone whose riding puts others at risk is brought to justice.
"We do urge motorcyclists to take up the Bikesafe course which gives riders hints and tips about how to ride safely."

Brilliant driving by the traffic police. They made it look effortless.
