High winds brought down trees and damaged buildings across Sussex overnight.

The Met Office reported gusts of wind of up to 60mph in Shoreham at about 2am.

The BP garage in Ditchling Road, Brighton, was closed this morning after its canopy was damaged early this morning.

A corrugated steel sheet fell down and a second was flapping loose when firefighters arrive.

The same problem was reported at Asda at The Crumbles, Eastbourne.

A tree was reported to have fallen in Dorset Gardens, Brighton.

Two trees fell on a man's car as he drove along the A286 at Fernhurst, near the Hampshire border, at about 2.10am. He was taken to hospital but was not thought to be seriously injured.

Police retrieved a piece of tarpaulin which blew onto the A23 near the junction with the A272.

In Worthing, a tree came down in Cotswold Road, Worthing, and roofs were damaged in Bath Road and The Boulevard. A Sky dish was blown off a roof in Eirene Avenue, Goring. Further west, a house was damaged in Woodlands Avenue, Rustington.

Trees were reported to have fallen elsewhere in the county, including at Northiam, near Rye, on the A21 at Flimwell, near Robertsbridge, and at North End Road, Yapton.
