A support group set up for younger women diagnosed with breast cancer is marking its tenth anniversary.
Breast Cancer Care's Younger Women's Forum first began in Brighton and the charity has launched a specially made film to recognise it.
The charity held a two day event in Brighton this week, where leading experts shared the latest updates on treatment options.
They also spoke about the impact of breast cancer on fertility and more general topics including body image, relationships, diet and exercise.
Breast cancer is not common in younger women and because of this, being diagnosed at a young age can be a very isolating experience.
Among those telling their stories was Sandra Sacre from Hove.
She was 36 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and attended a younger women’s forum for support.
She said: “Being diagnosed with breast cancer was terrifying.
“I often felt that there was not enough information for younger women and at chemotherapy I was always the only young woman so felt very isolated.
“Attending the forum made me realise that I was not alone.
Understanding
“It was amazing to talk to other people who understood what I had been going through. The talks were very informative and covered what we needed to know.
“During the two days I started to smile again and I made a great friend who I am still in touch with.
“The forum filled me with confidence and hope for the future.”
Breast Cancer Care runs forums around the country.
Sylvia Ward, the charity's services manager for younger women, said: “We’re really excited to be celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Younger Women’s Forum as we know how important the service is to younger women diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Sessions relate specifically to their needs, recognising issues that are important to them.
“The forums are also a great opportunity to meet other women of a similar age and many friendships form over the two days.”
