Hundreds have say on Seven Dials revamp

The Argus: Hundreds oppose changes to the Seven Dials roundabout on the Brighton and Hove border Hundreds oppose changes to the Seven Dials roundabout on the Brighton and Hove border

Hundreds of people have opposed town hall plans to revamp a roundabout.

Brighton and Hove City Council is currently asking people for their views on the Seven Dials junction.

The local authority believes steps can be taken to ease congestion and make it safer for pedestrians and road users.

But members of the Dials North West Community Association believe it will create extra traffic in neighbouring residential streets.

The group said it had collected more than 900 signatures opposing the scheme.

Surely that makes the petition invalid as many signatures would be from people who have nothing to do with the area. Take no notice and get on with these much needed improvements to a dangerous and busy area. Its obvious that traffic will not face any delays. The Arsegas has contributed nothing of value and is one reason why people are so ill informed about this issue.

If people object then they should do so directly with the council. The petition shows concern but I've seen this as a single objection in the spin-led council figures before rather than 900 objections.....

Yes, sign a petition but also go on the web/write objections. That way the council won't be able to say that there is "overwhelming support" as Lewes Road changes were spun

I think the petitions are fine as long as these people are making constructuve critisism and suggesting sensible alternatives. However, just to reject change is wrong as this junction is seriously rubbish.

Dear Five Ways Residents,
The council was told that turning Lewes Road into a single lane would displace traffic to residential streets.
For the past two weeks the Lewes road has been coned off to crest a single lane.
The traffic, including huge HGVs is now coming down through the residential streets. Last week three cars in one street were hit and this was reported to Sussex Police.
The council has now stuck traffic sensor wires across the road.
The council refused to believe us when we warned of rat runs in the consultation and still won't listen.
As they lied in their press release about the overwhelming support for the Lewes Road scheme we made an FoI request for the officers traffic report which have the real truth that traffic would be displaced and that the scheme would encourage less than one per cent of traffic onto public transport.
Make an FoI request, state publicly your concerns, write to councillors and ask for written responses and print off copies because you may be lied to.
This lot are worse than the Tories and Labour for misleading the public for their own ends.

and HJarrs and NickBtn - I have written to the council with an alternative option when the original proposal came to light.

I'm pretty sure most people are in agreement that something needs to be done with the junction - just not what is being proposed.

As Maxwells ghost has pointed out on numerous occasions - The Lewes Road change was railroaded through and has effected the surrounding locales... the same will be true here.

There's no real need for such a drastic change. IMO. The fact that the citywide 20mph limit will come into effect - which covers the dials - will be one strike point off my list of proposals... they just need to get the paint out and whack the box junction down, remove the barriers and change the timing to the traffic lights and everything should work fine... (oh and add a nice potted plant or sculpture to the middle of the roundabout) and bingo... seven dials regenerated... BOOM!

Hi Maxwell's Ghost (aka Paul Lewis, whose wife happens to run the argus website).

Firstly, the stroy is about Seven Dials, so your appear to Five Ways residents is slightly odd.

Secondly, what good did it do you in Lewes Road - the scheme is now being built because the council planners will always be one step ahead of idiots like you - thats why they have jobs and dont spend their time writing rubbish on these forums. Time to give up and get a life mate.

All this nonsense about Seven Dials is rubbish. Of course people will sign a petition if people like Dave Evans and Bob Potter (posts on here as 'anubis') turn up at your door feeding you lies - you'll sign it just to get rid of them.

Everyone knows the Seven Dials scheme will go ahead and will make the area much better for everyone. Perhaps not everyone - I expect Bob and Dave will both die of heart attacks when it gets voted through and they realise they've wasted the last couple of months trawling the streets for nothing!
