A bid for £24 million to turn Brighton and Hove into a "One Planet Eco City" has come up short.

Brighton and Hove City Council was one of 30 local authorities from across the country invited to enter a national competition for the grant.

The investment from the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board was to find a ‘Future City’ demonstrator.

However, city chiefs informed partners last night that Brighton and Hove's bid was unsuccessful.

It comes five months after the local authority was handed £50,000 to develop the proposal.

Its aim was to improve housing, transport, public health and the creative and digital economy while making the area more sustainable.

If achieved, Brighton and Hove would have been the first city in the world to gain One Planet status, which is aimed at reducing carbon emissions so people live within natural resources.

Bristol, London, Glasgow and Peterborough are the four cities still in the running for the funding.

The winner will be announced in January.
