Strip store of royal warrants, urges Brighton MP

An MP has urged the Queen to strip a store of its royal warrants, for selling foie gras.

Caroline Lucas, who represents Brighton Pavilion, accused London-based Fortnum & Mason of touting the prestigious awards while “improperly” promoting the luxury paté to its customers.

In a letter to the Lord Chamberlain, who oversees the warrants, Dr Lucas points to an investigation by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals earlier this year that allegedly uncovered cruelty to geese at one of the store’s French suppliers.

The letter said: “I am appalled that the mistreatment of geese and the sale of foie gras should be associated with the essence of Englishness.”

The pate is made of the liver of a duck or goose that has been specially fattened.

Foie gras force-feeding is outlawed in the UK, but it is still available from fine food specialists and in restaurants.

Dr Lucas added: “I know that my constituents feel strongly about such disregard for animal welfare and on their behalf I request that Fortnum & Mason’s warrants not be renewed until the company ends the sale of foie gras.”

Living in Oxford & Brussels, how does our "local MP" know what her constituents feel about a shop most can't afford to buy from & have never visited?
What next? A letter to Mr Blue Sky to see if the man in the moon is made of organic cheese?

While I agree this is not the most important issue in the world, I am not really convinced of your sanity based on your output here either. Certainly your comment here could be construed as a little deranged. :)

More sententious posturing to go with the opprobrium heaped on pink bikes, yule-tide logs, speciesism, Mr. and Mrs. and on... and on...and on. But they can't get it together to mount a competent bid for Eco-funding.

Our local MP writes to the Lord Chamberlain quoting as gospel an "investigation" by a bunch of violence condoning animal rights terrorists about mistreatment of geese in France.

Could she not think of anything a little closer to home and more relevant to her job to do?

So no burning of a yule log and no foie gras for starter at the Green's christmas dinner this year then.

And no turkey either I guess, because they will have outlawed butchers in the town by then too.

Just presents of pink bikes for the boys and blue bikes for the girls.

Is that the news in your head?

Yesterday I noted council support for an innovative housing solution for the homeless and weekly there seems to be another develpment announced that will bring more jobs / houses or both.

Of course, I can't remember you ever posting anything positive about anything yet, let alone poverty and homelessness.

Good Lord, you're just not that bright, are you?

I have been Vegan for 25 years and hate ALL forms of animal cruelty but I am more concerned about poverty/homelessness
/drug abuse and pensioners who are so broke that they freeze to death than I am about 'Brussels' Lucas and her latest rant about foie gras.

If the Greens REALLY cared about animal cruelty, they would be fit in to ban Kosher and Halal meat production. Greens go strangely silent when asked their position on these barbaric practices...

Just been looking at the website of Pippa Bartolloti, extraordinarily sinister-looking and slightly unhinged leader of the Welsh Greens. She states that the Greens, if they ever came to power (God help us all) would a) ban border controls, because borders are racist and b) would not ban Kosher or Halal meat production as 'we must be culturally sensitive'.

So much for 'Brussels' Lucas claim that the Green party is (quote) "passionate about animal rights" (unquote)

@BornInBrighton1968

What are you wittering on about?

We've been stunning animals for a couple of decades only - and that started to protect factory works not to ease the animal's suffering.

Islamic slaughter rituals are far nicer than our early factory farming attempts. Whether or not stunning is allowed is still debated by Muslims.

That the death should be clean and fast and that the knife should be sharp was codified in Muslim culture over 1000 years ago.

I agree that the situation needs to be improved, but suggesting that we should be driving divisions between huge segments of the population over an issue that will resolve itself over the next decade (in the first world, anyway) is tantamount to insanity.

Well, Caroline has to have something to boast about when she makes her twice-yearly trip to the 'Confederation Of European Marxist's' meeting in Antwerp, so boasting about attempting to ban Foie Gras (and ignoring poverty and homelessness in Brighton) is better than nothing...

The greens have ruined brighton and she has ruined brighton with her views. The sooner she gets kicked out of power the better she should keep her views to her self and stop lumping everbody onto her way of thinking. While she's at it, maybe she can petition the Queen to strip the BBC of it's Royal Charter, as it seems to be full of nonces and rapists. But then they would both have to start asking and answering some serious questions that would lead to places neither of them want to go.

Good I am glad you are concerned about poverty/homelessness /drug abuse and pensioners who are so broke that they freeze to death, I seem to recall the MP for Brighton Pavilion asking questions in the commons and pushing for the addressing of the above issues as MP and leader of the Green Party. But as you are clearly not satisfied and I am not that bright perhaps you could point out which other parties would place these issues higher up their agenda? We still have poverty/homelessness /drug abuse and pensioners who are so broke that they freeze to death following 13 years of Labour government when there was some money around; they made a bit of progress but undone to my mind by encouraging a runaway housing market for one thing. The Tories? Don't make me laugh!
