Shoreham Airport renamed for French connection
2:40pm Friday 30th November 2012 in News By Bill Gardner
Entrepreneurs Neil Laughton and Jonathan Candelon outside the airport building
An airport has been given a new name to attract soaring numbers of Continental customers.
Yesterday, flight bosses announced Shoreham Airport will now be rebranded as Brighton (Shoreham) Airport.
The announcement came at a press conference unveiling a new cross-Channel route to Paris.
Airport manager Ric Bellfield said he wanted to align the airport “more closely to Brighton”.
He said: “We have been thinking about doing this for a few years and this was an important trigger point.
“There are clear benefits with being associated with our neighbouring city.”
Neil Parkin, leader of Adur District Council, said people in Shoreham were “a bit miffed” about the name change.
He said: “It is confusing for people, and especially taxi drivers. I do get where they are coming from, though. I suppose the French won’t know where Shoreham is but they’ll know Brighton.”
New airline
At yesterday’s press conference inside the newly-named airport, two entrepreneurs launched a new airline – Brighton City Airways.
Neil Laughton, a pilot and adventurer, and flight instructor Jonathan Candelon met while trying to fly the world’s first flying car to Timbuktu.
They promised their new business would be “a local airline for local people and local businesses”.
The new airline is the latest in a long line of new routes from the airport, most of which have failed to get off the ground.
In 2006, Skysouth was founded at Shoreham Airport to serve the same Parisian airport before the company folded in February 2009.
But council leader Mr Parkin said Brighton City Airways “seemed to be made of the right stuff this time”.
The first flights will depart on March 6, flying to the Pontoise aerodrome, in suburban Paris.
Special features include a 15-minute check-in, no hidden fees and a VIP lounge before the hour-long journey to Paris aboard a 19-seat Let 410 commuter aircraft.
Tickets start at £69 one way for early bookings and the plane will make two return journeys every day.
If the venture is successful, the airline plans to fly passengers to new destinations, including Amsterdam and Brussels.

..... I find this a slightly bizarre question given that the new name is NOT "Brighton City Airport"?!?!?!

The Germans knew about Shoreham by Sea during the war because they made plans to invade it so I think the French would know.
If they don't they could look it up on the internet.
Perhaps the entrepreneurs might like to know that 'Shoreham' is in fact in Kent and 'Shoreham by Sea' is in Sussex.
It's about time that i;t was called by it's proper name, 'Shoreham by Sea' Airport.

And people wonder why Hove hates being part of the city so much - it's because our name is constantly being left out of the title of the 'city'!

It is Shoreham in the Doomsday book & was called this for 900 years so it completely accurate. If you had your name and a man in a suit changed it after 900 years would your mum call you by thd new one?
Also the airport is the other side of the river as per Shoreham Beach side so as its inland & not the 'beach' again simply Shoreham works
I also know FAR more than you about the German invasion plans but I'll leave that for another time

Typical of the Brightonistas. Anything the arrogant so and sos can grab, they will. Doesn't even need to be in the same county. Does this mean that everything between B&H and Shoreham Airport is now called Brighton.

OK Sarah, perhaps you could let me know if this post upsets anyone. I only ask because I got a message saying that my posts were upsetting some people. Strangely, you didn't think to tell me what posts, or what I had done wrong so I have no idea how to correct my error

Shoreham Beach was called Bungalow Town and didn't develop until the film industry got going at the beginning of the 1900's.(Long after the rest of New Shoreham and Old Shoreham and Kingston Buci developed). It was a collection of railway carriages etc.
Shoreham by Sea is a collective name for New Shoreham,Old Shoreham,New Erringham ,Old Erringham,Bungalow Town and Kingston Buci.
I don't know a lot about the german plans as I was only a baby (in Shoreham) but I do have a copy of the Shoreham Herald 3/11/1944 with a drawing of the plans on the front.
To get back to the subject-let's not forget that Charles escaped to France from Shoreham by Sea ,in a ship, after hiding in an oak tree so I would have thought that the French would have heard of Shoreham by sea more than Brighton.Interesting
ly,Charles bought the captain 'The Old Ship' in Brighton as a reward...
It has a far more interesting history. and is a much nicer town Brighton wasn't made famous until the prince Regent built a palace.
It's a shame that the entrepreneurs haven't gone into it.They may have been proud to call it Shoreham by Sea airport.(It is called Shoreham for short but Shoreham in Kent isn't shortened.)

I heard from an official at Adur district council some time ago that Worthing district and Brighton council were trying to get the river Adur made the border between them and do away with Adur district council. Brighton would get the harbour and most of the port of Shoreham, and Worthing would get the airport and the industrial estates at Lancing. The residents of Adur would just get shafted.

They always say “How do you make a small fortune out of flying at Shoreham?”
Answer “ Start off with a large fortune”
The destination airfield Pontoise aerodrome, in suburban Paris. Is at least 25 miles from Paris centre so transport costs will be a consideration.
An Eazy Jet to Charles De Gaulle Airport is quoted for early 2013 at around £35 to £45. but you have to get to Luton.
It will be interesting to see how this works out
