A controversial academy has been created.
Worthing High School has officially become an academy this week.
The governing body of Worthing High School announced that the Secretary of State signed the school’s Funding Agreement on Friday confirming the school’s conversion to an academy with effect from December 1.
Teachers and parents fought a high profile campaign against academy status, resulting in two teachers’ strikes.
Acting Headteacher Carolyn Dickinson, said: “The name of the school will not change and the inclusive ethos of the school will remain at our core. We shall, of course continue our drive for improvement in all areas of student development.”
The Worthing Academy Action Group, made up of parents and prospective parents, strongly opposed the plans, however yesterday told The Argus they were giving up on the campaign.
A spokeswoman said: “Now that Worthing High is an academy, our campaign against the conversion is over. We wish the school well for the future and will be watching carefully for evidence of the benefits that academy status brings for students and staff.”
A new school website has been set up on which Ms Dickinson is seeking feedback.
