Town hall U-turn on London Road parking charges

The Argus: Park the charges Park the charges

Traders and motorists are celebrating after a town hall U-turn on parking prices – with bosses admitting more concessions could follow.

Thousands of people have complained about Brighton and Hove City Council’s parking tariffs after it hiked city centre prices to £3.50 an hour.

Despite many firms, some of which claimed they were on the verge of going bust, backing The Argus’s Park The Charges campaign, the local authority’s Green administration has stood by the increases, claiming they would reduce congestion and push people towards other transport.

But yesterday (December 3) council chiefs revealed charges in the London Road area would be cut from as early as next month. Parking bosses said other concessions could follow as part of a widespread review in the new year.

Ann Townsend, who owns premises in London Road, said: “This is really positive news. Without the support of The Argus I’m quite sure we would not have managed these results.”

City centre charges are currently £3.50 for one hour, £6 for two hours and £10 for four hours.

But, after complaints from traders in the London Road area that trade was down by a third, charges have been dropped to £2, £4 and £6 for one, two and four hours.

Council bosses said they had planned to reduce the tariffs in the area from St Peter’s Church to Preston Circus in April but this will be “accelerated”.

The local authority said it means drivers would be paying only 30p more for an hour than in 2011. The 30-minute band, scrapped when the new charges were introduced in April, has not been reinstated.

Damage to trade

Ian Davey, chairman of the council’s transport committee, said the changes had been made after listening to traders’ concerns.

He said: “We recognise that business in the area has suffered over the past couple of decades and we are listening and taking steps to support local companies, particularly traders.”

A statement on behalf of London Road Traders’ Association said: “There is little doubt the increase seriously damaged local trade and drove shoppers away.

"The planned reduction in parking charges will almost certainly bring these customers back, as well as encourage new people.”

Traders in other areas, such as in Madeira Drive, Brighton, where charges are up to £20 a day, are hoping it is a sign of further concessions.

Coun Davey said: “There is an ongoing dialogue with traders in Madeira Drive. We have met with them and are seeking a further meeting before Christmas.”

At last emperor Davey starts to see the light. But what about Western Rd Hove? No reply to emails sent by by the local traders association asking for a meeting. Could this somehow be connected to the fact that councillors Ian Davey, Pete West, Ollie Sykes and Phelim Mac Cafferty will shortly be appearing before the standards comittee for abuse of office. Vote of no confidence petition going well with paper versions being available in many shops and pubs across the city soon. Lets get them out before they ruin the city

Great news that the council has listened - pity it has taken so long and the traders suffered.

Perhaps a hope that the council will also listen about Lewes Road. Massive queues yesterday caused by a lane out for repairs. This is what the council is currently planning for every day with knock on effects to side streets as people try to avoid the 40min plus queues. Unfortunately this type of change is much more expensive to make than a parking charge U-turn

A U-Turn despite MONTHS of statements from the Greens that high parking charges had NOTHING to do with the drop in shoppers and visitors. So which "truth" to believe ? It shows the Greens to be either liars or incompetent ! Anyone stupid enough to vote for them next time needs shooting.

Do you honestly think a petition only 80 have signed so far is going to get the Greens out of the council? Or that the standards committee is actually going to punish four councillors for a harmless comment on a mail? Oh boy, you are in for a big surprise.

Actually you're wrong. The coup d'etat petition has actually got 84 signatures.

If Labour and the Tories actually wanted to form a coalition to run the Council they could have done it the day after the election! The simple truth is that neither has the slightest intention of doing so. Why else do you think neither party has lifted a finger to drum up any support for this "petition"?

If Labour got into bed with the Tories, the Greens would clean up the left-wing vote in the city next time (and would doubtless pick up a number of defecting members too); the Tories for their part would struggle to explain to their base why they are teaming up with the party that they nationally blame for "the Mess".

I'm all in favour of people's giving up their cars, walking and so on; but you can't force this. The continued irritation and opposition to the increased charges was creating a counter-productive backlash against alternative transport, which in fact isn't available or convenient for all.
But perhaps Ian and Co may now be forgiven; I'm sure they meant well!

AndyR, the Greens have blown the alternative vote to the mainstream. Wherever you go in the city, from business meetings, to dentist surgeries to bus queues, if you listen to the talk, all people say is: The bloody Greens.
You will know from recent elections that UKIP are really making some serious strides so they could be the next contenders as an alternative.
The Labour and Tory groups have failed in their opposition to deal with any issues in the past two years, apart from the odd ward councillor making the effort.

Do you honestly think a petition only 80 have signed so far is going to get the Greens out of the council? Or that the standards committee is actually going to punish four councillors for a harmless comment on a mail? Oh boy, you are in for a big surprise.
LOL we will see you out the door.
I don't think so - 80 people aren't going to remove this council. There is no local Western Rd traders association that anyone know anything about.... appears to be just a vitriolic one man campaign to hound local councillors...
99 just a few minutes ago. not bad for a petition started on Thursday PM.
So in the Argus on Saturday it said that prominent Conservative and 2011 local Conservative candidate Adam Campbell is behind the petition. Is that you? You knew about this petition before it came out, so it putting two and two together... By the way I have not hidden that I have voted Green and am now a member, but not active.
No I'm not Adam but I do know him quite well. As to his being a prominent Conservative, do you think he is exactly flavour of the month at the office in Hove? Calling for the local Conservatives to work with Labour is not going to make him top of their Christmas card list is it? You admitted to having voted green but now are inactive. Is this because you feel guilty at having helped bring this bunch of parasites into power. You should be hanging your head in shame as are many others in the city. Don't forget to vote and redeem yourself. http://present.brigh ton-hove.gov.uk/mgEP etitionDisplay.aspx? ID=360&RPID=6033

It's about time they have seen sense, but I fear it has come too late. Good news before Xmas, but it could not come sooner, the charges were beyond a joke. I hope they sort out Madeira drive and I may actually want to return to the Gym I had to leave because I could not afford to pay at least £3.50 to park every time I went there. I did it once but never again. Still, I am at the Triangle now, Sussex's best leisure centre. And the parking is FREE and very plentiful. Absolute bliss.

A spot on and sensible view. I'm not so virulently ant-Green as some on here, but transport is one area where the Greens have allowed dogma and ideology to warp their actions ('Fairfax Sakes' insane dribblings above are proof. It reminds me a bit of the old Realo v Fundie rows in the old Ecology Party). Could we finally be seeing the start of a sane transport strategy?

Unfortunately the rise hasn't pushed people to use other forms of transport, it has convinced visitors that Brighton is far from value for money and they have taken their custom elsewhere. Reducing the parking fees (I doubt they will be reduced back the old tariff) won't be enough to tempt them back again. How is it that if you work for the Council (at a certain level of course) or are an elected Councillor you can park for free almost anywhere and how come there are no resident's parking restrictions in Council estates only around private residential areas.
