Town hall U-turn on Brighton parking charges (From The Argus)

Lets get this right....
The changes have been made as the lying council has suffered a drop in revenue, otherwise they would be claiming it as a sucess and planning even more rises

Vote of no confidence petition going well with paper versions being available in many shops and pubs across the city soon. Lets get them out before they ruin the city

Great news that the council has listened - pity it has taken so long and the traders suffered.

Perhaps a hope that the council will also listen about Lewes Road. Massive queues yesterday caused by a lane out for repairs. This is what the council is currently planning for every day with knock on effects to side streets as people try to avoid the 40min plus queues. Unfortunately this type of change is much more expensive to make than a parking charge U-turn

To much to hope they will do another
U-turn regarding the Lewes road and Seven dials Looney projects

A U-Turn despite MONTHS of statements from the Greens that high parking charges had NOTHING to do with the drop in shoppers and visitors. So which "truth" to believe ? It shows the Greens to be either liars or incompetent ! Anyone stupid enough to vote for them next time needs shooting.

Oh great, all we need is further encouragement for cars to pillage the local environment. Witness the return of white van men and London daytrippers en mass, pollution riddled streets, increased global warming and gridlock. Shame on the Greens for buckling to these deceitful petrol headed capitalist mobs. I only hope the rest of the city will not be subject to this U-turn of principle

Actually you're wrong. The coup d'etat petition has actually got 84 signatures.

If Labour and the Tories actually wanted to form a coalition to run the Council they could have done it the day after the election! The simple truth is that neither has the slightest intention of doing so. Why else do you think neither party has lifted a finger to drum up any support for this "petition"?

If Labour got into bed with the Tories, the Greens would clean up the left-wing vote in the city next time (and would doubtless pick up a number of defecting members too); the Tories for their part would struggle to explain to their base why they are teaming up with the party that they nationally blame for "the Mess".

Are the named councillors part of a particular part caucus?

I'm all in favour of people's giving up their cars, walking and so on; but you can't force this. The continued irritation and opposition to the increased charges was creating a counter-productive backlash against alternative transport, which in fact isn't available or convenient for all.
But perhaps Ian and Co may now be forgiven; I'm sure they meant well!

AndyR, the Greens have blown the alternative vote to the mainstream. Wherever you go in the city, from business meetings, to dentist surgeries to bus queues, if you listen to the talk, all people say is: The bloody Greens.
You will know from recent elections that UKIP are really making some serious strides so they could be the next contenders as an alternative.
The Labour and Tory groups have failed in their opposition to deal with any issues in the past two years, apart from the odd ward councillor making the effort.

I don't think so - 80 people aren't going to remove this council. There is no local Western Rd traders association that anyone know anything about.... appears to be just a vitriolic one man campaign to hound local councillors...

,davey and others regarding the illegally marked parking bays down london road that are unenforceable that have got to them,or the possibility of a judge ordering the council to repay ALL fines from at least 6 years ago thats scaring them!!! it only takes one single member of the public to do this,ps look what happened to guildford council in 2008!! i believe they had to repay 5-7 million£

oh and now your aware of the problem,me wonders if the parking wardens (nsl) could be commiting criminal offences under the torte of malsfeasance act (no public body must mislead the general public) its amazing what laws exist on the statute books

No I'm not Adam but I do know him quite well. As to his being a prominent Conservative, do you think he is exactly flavour of the month at the office in Hove? Calling for the local Conservatives to work with Labour is not going to make him top of their Christmas card list is it?

It's about time they have seen sense, but I fear it has come too late. Good news before Xmas, but it could not come sooner, the charges were beyond a joke. I hope they sort out Madeira drive and I may actually want to return to the Gym I had to leave because I could not afford to pay at least £3.50 to park every time I went there. I did it once but never again. Still, I am at the Triangle now, Sussex's best leisure centre. And the parking is FREE and very plentiful. Absolute bliss.

A spot on and sensible view. I'm not so virulently ant-Green as some on here, but transport is one area where the Greens have allowed dogma and ideology to warp their actions ('Fairfax Sakes' insane dribblings above are proof. It reminds me a bit of the old Realo v Fundie rows in the old Ecology Party). Could we finally be seeing the start of a sane transport strategy?

Unfortunately the rise hasn't pushed people to use other forms of transport, it has convinced visitors that Brighton is far from value for money and they have taken their custom elsewhere. Reducing the parking fees (I doubt they will be reduced back the old tariff) won't be enough to tempt them back again. How is it that if you work for the Council (at a certain level of course) or are an elected Councillor you can park for free almost anywhere and how come there are no resident's parking restrictions in Council estates only around private residential areas.
