The cold snap is set to continue in the county with emergency services warning of dangerous driving conditions.

Temperatures will plunge below zero again on tonight (December 6), and with a clear sky will feel as cold as minus six degrees.

And it will struggle to get above three degrees on Saturday, December 8, as Sussex shivers once more.

Gritters will be out in force over the coming days to ensure the road network continues to function.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “Our contractor Balfour Beatty has been out six days on the trot laying ten grams of salt on the roads.

“Seven thousand tonnes are now in stock at depots across West Sussex.

“We are prepared and ready to go.”

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Our gritters will be out on the streets again later today as we are expecting a heavy frost.”

Drivers are being advised to drive with caution with patches of ice likely on the roads.

Lewes borough commander Garry Collins said: “We are acutely aware of the dangers at this time of the year brought on by the changes in weather.

“Local fire crews and police were working with Tesco store in Lewes on Friday delivering key safety messages and handing out free window scrapers.”
