A starving dog was tied up and abandoned outside a pub in freezing conditions.

The RSPCA has released CCTV footage of the moment two women tied up and left the “severely emaciated” rottweiler outside the Crown Hotel in Littlehampton.

An RSPCA inspector described the animal, later named Hero by pub staff, as one of the thinnest dogs he had seen, as the charity appealed for help to catch the pair.

The dog weighed less than half his normal body weight when he was abandoned by the women, one of whom was believed to be heavily pregnant.

Will Jenkins, who lives in a flat above the pub, raised the alarm at around 8.30pm last Wednesday when he heard a dog barking in the courtyard at the back of the pub.

He said: “It was just after 8pm and at first I just thought it was a dog belonging to one of the regulars.

“It was only about 25 minutes later when I went to take my own dog for a walk when I spotted it.

“At first I didn't realise the condition it was in and I went into the pub to ask who owned it as it was a cold night.

'Awful condition'

“It was soon clear it didn’t belong to anyone and when I went back I saw the awful condition it was in.


“I’ve never seen a dog in such a bad condition before.

“It was awful.

“We immediately got in contact with the RSPCA and dug out the CCTV footage. Hopefully they will be able to trace the owners.”

Inspector Tony Pritchard rescued the animal and took him to a vet where he is being cared for.

He said: “This poor dog was completely emaciated, one of the thinnest dogs I have seen.

“A male adult Rottweiler should weigh 50-60 kilos.

“This dog weighed just 22 kilos. He was simply starving and now all he wants to do is eat.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the RSPCA on 0300 1234999.

Well the two that left te dog are equally to blame,surely they should be easy t catch and brought to justice.Everyone knows each other in that area so i hope they do the right thing and report these two womn t the police.

Doesn't look "heavily pregnant" to me - just some fat old low-life trout. WHY? Soooo easy to take to a rehoming centre. But instead leave a starving emaciated dog in the cold. In fact that's why they didn't want to take it to a rehoming centre - too ashamed of the fact that the dog was severely underfed and they feared they would be charged with cruelty. The two fat ladies clearly didn't have any difficulty buying food to stuff their own greedy gobs. I pray that someone recognises these revolting people and reports them to the RSPCA.

I would like to change two words in my previous post. I was being kind calling them "ladies". The word I'd like to use won't see the light of day. And I also said they'd be too "ashamed" to take the dog to a rehoming centre. Not ashamed, just simply bricking it that they'd get in trouble! They have no shame.

The more I think about this the more it angers me. These fat, repulsive in-bred hogs are worried about their warmth even though they are grossly over weight. They worry about it so much they wear 80's style puffer jackets IN PUBLIC! So we are clearly dealing with classless and mad witches. Whilst the poor hound is just left shivering, unloved and unfed (I envisage these monsters probably even ate dog food, such is their gluttony)

I really hope these beasts have a horrible Christmas waiting for the "knock on the door" and then get beaten up. I also hope they NEVER breed (though looking at them, only a rabid animal would consider doing them, to be honest)

Hopefully, the Argus will stick to the story until they are caught then publish their full details and address so every mad person can take turn to burn them.

Sorry to rant, but I love big dogs and hate animal abusers probably more than I hate brussle sprouts, and I really hate them.

I will match the £50 donation if they are caught.

Fact. They have tied a starving, cold dog up and left it.

Even if it was no their dog, any decent huiman being if found in possession of such a poor animal would have a moral duty to take it to the RSPCA, police or a vets.

Hove Actually, even in the remote case they were not the owners, they is such a huge moral impact, they deserve to die a horrible death.

And if it was their dog, there are umpteen crimes committed.

It takes starving an animal for weeks for it to lose 50% of it's body weight. A tin of dog food costs less than 50p. In fact you can get it free if you're on benefits or hard-up for cash from the PDSA. It's a wonder the poor animal didn't die of hypothermia, given it's condition and being left in the freezing cold. Probably would've done if it weren't for the pub landlord raising the alarm. It's one thing to "be at your wits' end" struggling to look after a dog, at which point most would take it to a rehoming centre. It's entirely another to starve a dog for weeks until it becomes a skeleton and then dump it in the cold rather than drive the extra mile to Raystede or Patcham or Shoreham. Poor women, at their wits' end! Give me a break!

Ban the private breading of animals for money. Stop making animals 'fashion' statements in the media. More people should report the ill treatment of pets of all kinds to the correct authorities. The same could be said for children in this scum bag society we live in. The only thing that can be said for the poor dog is ' better late than never' they could have waited for him to die, do they have a minute shred of compassion, perhaps we should starve them to that point. They are obviously thick as........

Judging by the response from HOVE ACTUALLY I would be 100% certain that he or she has been guilty of harming animals in the past and is trying to make excuses because they can identify with these vile women who did that to an animal.

Or HOVE ACTUALLY is the disgusting owner of that dog.

HOVE ACTUALLY for comments and an opinion like that you should be the one to endure pain and suffering for 2013 and I hope that you do. Remember this when things start to go wrong for you.

No Hove Actually, how utterly despicable to even attempt to justify this appalling inhumane treatment of a dog. Those responsible sicken me and need to be weeded out and severely punished. That is of course, if the vast majority of the general public don't get there first! I pray this poor frail little dog finds a fabulous loving home. No doubt this poor dog will not only need intensive medical care before he can be rehomed, but his trust in human beings who are supposed to care for him will take time to rebuild.
