Outstanding Key Stage 2 results for Brighton and Hove schools

Primary schools in Brighton and Hove have achieved their best ever exam results.

Figures released today reveal every school in the city met the national benchmark in English and maths.

The league tables from the Department for Education for Key Stage Two (KS2) show in every one of Brighton and Hove’s 44 primary schools at least 50% of pupils reached the Government’s Level 4 target in reading, writing and arithmetic.

Year 6 pupils sitting their SATs exams secured the results, which saw 79%, or 1,874 children, picking up a Level 4 or above in maths and English – 204 more than did so a year earlier.

The only negative was that none of the city’s schools managed to get 100% of their pupils to attain the grade.

Big improvement

Whitehawk Primary School saw the biggest improvement, having been the lowest performing school in the city last year.

The school was deemed as “failing” by Ofsted when inspectors visited and in line with Government policy was earmarked to become an academy.

City College Brighton and Hove is looking to apply to the Department for Education to sponsor the school.

The proportion of its pupils gaining Level 4 at English and maths at KS2 was languishing at 35% in 2011.

But this year that figure has leapt to 65%, showing an astonishing improvement.

Ann-Marie Noble, the assistant headteacher at Whitehawk Primary who is taking over as headteacher in January, said the rise was due to a rigorous and committed approach from the whole school’s staff to provide the best education for their pupils.

She added: “We are just absolutely delighted with our results.

“This year we are going to build on this result and we are looking to get out of special measures and get a ‘good’ on our Ofsted inspection.”

Best performance

The best performing primary school was St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School. In English and maths, 97% of pupils there gained level 4 at KS2.

Headteacher Jacqueline Lance paid tribute to the hard work of staff and pupils.

She said: “Everyone here is delighted.

“The governors acknowledge the hard work everyone has done.

“There has also been a lot of parental support which is important – we are a community school.”

St Margaret’s C of E Primary School was next, with 93% of pupils reaching the required level.

And Patcham Junior School was the third best in the city, with 91% attaining Level 4.

Most improved

But it is at the other end of the spectrum where the improvement has been seen the most.

Last year Whitehawk Primary School, Hertford Junior, St Mary Magdalen, Moulsecoomb Primary, Mile Oak Primary and Fairlight Primary all had less than half of pupils achieving level 4.

But in a stunning turnaround, not one of the schools saw less than 50% reach the target for English and maths this year.

Sue Shanks, the chairman of the council’s children and young people committee, said: “This is the result of lots of hard work by staff, parents and most importantly pupils. Well done to all of them.

“A good foundation at this age gives a great basis to build on for future success.”
