Academy move for failing sussex schools?
1:50pm Thursday 13th December 2012 in News
Seven primary schools in West Sussex achieved perfect marks for their Key Stage Two tests.
The figure matches last year’s achievement for kids sitting maths and English tests.
Aldingbourne Primary in Chichester, All Saints C of E in Horsham, Ashurst C of E in Steyning, Boxgrove C of E, Lavant C of E near Chichester, Fittleworth C of E and St Mary’s C of E in Horsham all saw 100% of pupils reaching Level 4, the Government’s national standard.
But one primary school, Broadfield East Junior School, saw only 47% gaining Level 4.
East Sussex saw an improvement in their results too, with 77% of pupils reaching the mark in English and maths compared to 72% in 2011.
Eight schools saw 100% of pupils reach Level 4, the same as last year.
But one school failed to get half of pupils to reach the benchmark.
Marshlands Primary School in Hailsham saw only 43% of pupils get Level 4, making it the worst in the county.
Blackboys C of E in Uckfield, Danehill C of E near Haywards Heath, Groombridge St Thomas’s C of E, Punnetts Town Community in Heathfield, St Mary’s C of E in Uckfield, High Hurstwood C of E, St Philip’s Catholic in Uckfield and Staplecross Methodist in Robertsbridge all had every pupil meet Level 4.
The news comes as East Sussex was criticised by education secretary Michael Gove, who had called the council a “barrier” to improvement.
In a letter to East Sussex MPs, Mr Gove delivered a withering assessment of the county’s primary schools, saying “too many schools continue to underperform.”
He had threatened to turn all of those failing in their Ofsted inspections to be turned into academies.
It is yet to be seen if these current exam results will help appease the minister or dissuade him from bringing in academies.
