Brighton and Hove mayor axes party, and helps kids in care
4:30pm Thursday 13th December 2012 in News By Ben Leo, reporter
Brighton and Hove mayor Bill Randall pictured earlier this year with children from Grove Road
Town hall chiefs have cancelled their Christmas drinks and are using the funds to organise a party for children in care.
Mayor of Brighton and Hove Bill Randall had originally arranged with his council colleagues to meet for a festive party this week.
But in the true spirit of Christmas, he has cancelled the drinks and instead organised a yuletide celebration for more than 130 local children in care or in foster homes.
The party at the City College restaurant in the AMEX Stadium tomorrow (December 14) will feature kids’ entertainers, singers, dancers, food, table tennis and a climbing wall.
Mr Randall said: “I won’t be getting involved in the climbing wall but I am going to have a cameo in a Father Christmas costume.
“I just thought in this current climate it would be appropriate to do something for other people and putting on a party for local children in care is a good idea.
“The kids, carers and foster parents will be entertained with performances from the great Brighton Youth Choir, a young local breakdancer who is very good and children’s entertainers.
Celebration
“It’s a good opportunity for the children to enjoy themselves this holiday and for the carers and foster parents to have a well deserved celebration.”
Mr Randall said he wasn’t yet sure how much the party would cost but it would definitely not cost any more than the original town hall shindig.
He added: “City College have been very generous in their support and help with organising the party so I must thank them and everyone else involved.
“I look forward to Friday and hope everyone has a great time.”

Are you a member of the Green Party or a Green Councillor. Can you confirm you have a political affiliation to the party?

Yes Mr Randall, there are people in the city who desperately need help and this is the right thing to do.
Now go back to the town hall and tell your colleagues the news and get the to stop frittering away our money on their own projects and start spending it on other people who actually need help.
Mr Randall you are digging up the adequate cycle lane on the Lewes Road and making a new one......in this climate where every two minutes in the UK someone loses their home and in this city 12,000 people are on the council waitin list.
Aren't you even a little bit ashamed of your party's selfish waste of money on their own pet project and other similar schemes which stroke your colleagues' egos and ignore the real issues in the city?

Lets not forget that a young woman died a few years ago on the "adequate" cycle lane towards Falmer precisely because the cycle lane is so poor and the cycle lane is so "adequate" that only a tiny percentage of potential users actually cycle down the Lewes Rd!

The proposed Lewes Rd cycle lane is such a terrible idea that even the NHS is providing some of the funding as the long term health benefits are such a no-brainer. It is so wasteful financially that it is drawing in millions of external funding, much of which will be spent in the local economy.
I don't know why you don't want to encourage more people to cycle? It certainly isn't going to happen with the shambles we have at present.

Check out the results for obesity surgery, smoking cessation clinics etc.
As for the lane being inadequate, you don't cycle along there, you live in hanover and sometimes post that you might be tempted to take the little one to the park on a summer's day.
You are out of touch with real people and perhaps getting back into the workplace at this time may give you an insight into the challenges working families are facing.
