Hundreds of primary school pupils took part in an athletics competition.
More than 260 children from 11 schools took part in the Indoor Athletics Competition at Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre.
The event, which was part of the Active for Life project organised by Brighton and Hove City Council’s sports development team, included relay races, indoor shot put and long jump competitions.
A pupil from St Mark’s Primary in Whitehawk said: “The afternoon has been great, I love running and indoor athletics is so cool.”
The boys team from St Mary’s Catholic Primary in Portslade celebrated winning the relay race by doing the Mo-Bot move, made famous by athlete Mo Farrah at this year’s London 2012 Games.
The event also presented the opportunity for the children to find out about other running events happening in their local community after Christmas which include the Active for Life Running Challenge course, the Brighton Half Marathon Youth Races & The Brighton Marathon Shlurp Mini Mile races.
Emma Greenough from the Active for Life project said: “It’s been great getting over 200 young people involved competing and having fun at today’s event, running is such a great sport to get involved with and hopefully today’s competition will inspire some of these young people to get out running and enter the great races that are coming up.”
Volunteer helpers
Also helping run the event were 15 volunteers from City College Brighton and Hove (CCB), which as sport and public services students, judged the field events and helped with timing on the track.
City College’s Robbie Marr said: “This is great event to get our students out and volunteering in the community, it’s great that the Active for Life team can put these events on and we can then work with them to make it happen and get these young people having a go at athletics.
The winners of the event were St Luke’s Primary. Queen’s Park Primary came in second and St Bartholomew’s Primary took home the bronze.
The schools that competed were: St John the Baptist Primary, St Mary’s Catholic Primary, St Mary Magdalen Primary, Queen’s Park Primary, Coldean Primary, Carden Primary, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, Hertford Junior School, St Bartholomew’s C of E Primary, St Luke’s Primary and St Mark’s Primary.
