Brighton school makes contest’s final

A school has been shortlisted in a national competition to win £80,000 for a new classroom.

Varndean School in Balfour Road, Brighton, is one of only six schools through to the final of a competition offering schools a 30-pupil capacity classroom.

The 1,380-pupil secondary school was one of more than 600 schools that entered The Times Education Supplement (TES) and Clearspace Buildings competition to win a classroom.

Staff impressed judges with their proposal to use the new classroom to allow under-achieving pupils to learn new skills to help them get into work on leaving school.

The competition was open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK and the school’s staff had to explain their vision in no more than 300 words.

Head teacher William Deighan said: “We are so pleased to have reached the final of such a valuable competition.”

TES members will vote online at www.tes.co.uk/building for the winner and the school is hoping that as many people as possible will log in and vote.
