A new council chief has pledged to “help the city achieve its potential”.
Penny Thompson, who was the head of the General Care Social Council, was appointed as Brighton and Hove City Council’s chief executive in October.
After six weeks of meeting and listening to people, she gave her first interview to The Argus yesterday.
Ms Thompson, who officially took up the £150,000 post on December 1, said: “It is a privilege and challenge being a local authority chief executive with such a diverse and fascinating set of responsibilities and demands.
“Brighton and Hove is a truly wonderful city with a huge potential for the future and the city council has an important role to play.
"I plan to build on progress made recently and to honour my commitment to leading an organisation where accountabilities and purpose are clear and delivery is our main focus.
“I look forward to working with staff, partners and elected members of all political parties to help the city fulfil its potential.”
A 30-day consultation on reshaping the senior management structure at the local authority began yesterday. The Argus understands this will see the creation of a deputy chief executive post.
However, unlike the previous “intelligent commissioning” model introduced by previous chief executive John Barradell, there will be no additional costs to the taxpayer.
