Cricket commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins dies after cancer battle

Test Match Special commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins has died.

The 67-year-old commentator was diagnosed with terminal cancer in January last year and his death has been announced within the last hour.

He joined the BBC in 1970 and commentated on his first match, a one-day international, in 1972.

Martin-Jenkins, who lived in Sussex, was cricket correspondent of the Daily Telegraph from 1991 to 1999 and of the Times from 1999 to 2008.

His son Robin played for Sussex for more than 15 years before retiring in 2010 to become a geography and religious studies teacher at Hurstpierpoint College.

Another untimely death in the world of cricket. Your commentary will be sorely missed.

This is just very sad news.

Two Sussex cricket legends gone in three days - Tony Greig and, now, CMJ. Sharing a commentary box at Beaconsfield in the early 90s, where Sussex were playing, CMJ asked me, in all seriousness, how many balls Sussex captain Alan Wells had. He was also the first voice I heard when I started listening to overseas Test Match Special, from Perth, in November 1982.

A very sad start to the year. One of the first radio broadcasters I can really remember - particularly recall his commentaries on a crackly radio from the Caribbean in th mid 70s especially when Tony Greig took a stack of wickets in the final test to level the series. A thoughtful and articulate journalist and broadcaster who will be sadly missed from Test Match Special this summer.

Sorry to hear this, especially so soon after Tony Greig, a knowledgeable and sensible broadcaster who will be missed by all cricket fans.
