Footage has been released of a suspect who attempted to rob a Barnham convenience store.

The teenage youth walked into the Barnham Superfayre store in Lake Lane, Barnham, produced what appeared to be a handgun, and demanded money.

But when the sole member of staff simply refused and started to phone the police, he ran off empty-handed and got into a silver coloured Mercedes saloon waiting nearby, which sped off.

The staff member, a man, was shaken but unhurt.

The incident happened just before 6.30pm on Saturday, December 1.

The suspect is about 5'6" to 5'7" tall, with black hair and of slim build.

Detective Constable Jon Berisford said; "We are keen to hear from anyone who recognises the suspect, so if you can help please call us via 101 quoting serial 1317 of 1/12. You can also contact independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

"We think the CCTV images from the store may well jog the memories of people who may recognise the suspect as someone they know.

"In addition, anyone in the area that evening may have noticed someone we think may have been an accomplice, who walked up and down past the store just beforehand, evidently checking to see if it was empty of customers before the would-be robber went in.

"The member of staff, who was alone at the time, reacted with amazing coolness and his calm reaction clearly unsettled the suspect, who soon retreated.
