Sleeping rough to aid homeless

Sleeping rough can be “soul-destroying”, but Worthing Churches Homeless Project members are spending a night under the stars to raise money.
On January 26 a group of people will be spending the night in the playground of Broadwater Church of England Middle School.
Community fundraiser Rachel Hudler said: “Even just one night, in safety, well fed and with friends, is pretty hard – ask anyone who has done it.”
They are searching for more people to join the sleep out, which will begin at 7.30pm with a barbecue.
Warm clothes, a woolly hat and sleeping bag are essential.
Worthing Churches Homeless Projects works with people who need support to eat regular meals and find safe, warm and dry shelter.
Volunteers have seen an increase in the need for services, working with about 500 homeless and insecurely housed individuals through Day Centre and accommodation projects.
About 80% of them are from the local area.
As well as food, showers and clean clothes, specialist help is provided on substance abuse, mental health and resettlement issues.
Last year the event raised more than £12,000.
