750 in call for Brighton and Hove art spaces

Hundreds of people are calling for greater protection for artists’ work spaces against multimillion-pound redevelopments.

With a number of major projects being drawn up across Brighton and Hove, a petition was started by creative workers urging town planners not to forget them when looking to the future.

Without affordable space in which to make and create, they claim the city could lose its tag as a cosmopolitan centre for the arts.

More than 750 people signed the online petition to make sure artist workspaces are “not sacrificed” for urban redevelopments.

It will be presented to the council’s economic development and culture committee in Hove Town Hall on Thursday, January 10.

The Green Party popinjays who masquerade as aesthetes have yet to show any sort of appreciation of the needs of the arts and culture in our city - very poor record. Doubt we shall see much change here.

There are plans to refurbish New England House and dedicate it to creative industries too.

Around the country other councils are shutting down libraries and ceasing arts funding altogether. See Labour Newcastle for example.
