Basements are flooded by rain in Portslade
10:20am Wednesday 9th January 2013 in News
Basements have been flooded after a period of heavy rain.
Brighton and Hove City Council last night issued a warning after receiving the reports from properties in Portslade Village.
Representatives from the local authority and Southern Water yesterday visited the affected homes in High Street and South Street.
A council spokesman said: “The cause is likely to be rising groundwater.
“Southern Water has installed a flood alleviation scheme in the area and are closely monitoring the groundwater levels.
“At this time no evacuation of any premises is being considered.”
A flood alert has been in place in Patcham for the last week.
The local authority admitted ground water levels have stabilised in the last 24 hours, but the warning remained overnight.
