Brighton student shortlisted for national award

A MEDICAL student has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
Luke Holland, who studies at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, has made it to the national finals of the Surgical Skills competition organised by the Royal College of Surgeons.
He beat ten fellow students from the Sussex, Surrey and Kent regional heat by demonstrating a range of skills including stitching and knot-tying and cyst removal tests.
He will now take part in the final in Scotland in March.
Mr Holland, 23, said: “Over the past two years I have worked hard to become confident in my surgical skills so it is very rewarding for this to have been recognised by winning the regional heat.
“Taking part in the grand final is an exciting prospect, although I feel I have a lot of work to do in order to stand a chance at winning.
“I am anticipating the final |to be more challenging and I feel I have more to play for which will no doubt |increase the adrenaline on the day.”
The overall winner will win a trip to a European surgical training institute in Germany later this year.
