Reward for recapture of Brighton-based ‘professional’ raider

 A “professional” tobacco raider who smashed his way into two shops a night until he was caught is wanted by police again.

Daniel Sallis is wanted for return to prison after breaching the terms of his release from a stretch handed down for similar crimes.

A £500 reward has been offered by police for information leading to his arrest.

But detectives are declining to name Daniel Sallis as a suspect over a raid on a Co-op in Hove this week.

At about 5am on Wednesday, January 9 two men smashed a glass panel to get into the Co-op store in The Parade, Hangleton Road.

They stole cigarettes worth several thousand pounds.

One wore a black hooded top with Nike written on the left arm, a grey T-shirt, dark bottoms and a dark hat and scarf.

The other wore a black hooded top with a grey stripe around the hood, and grey tracksuit bottoms with a light grey stripe down the side.

They are thought to have driven off in a silver car.

CCTV footage

Detective Sergeant Ariana Giles, of Brighton and Hove CID, said: “We are keen to talk to anyone who was out early that morning. CCTV shows that there were a number of people in the area at the time.”

She said there are no “named suspects” over the Co-op raid and that the search for Sallis is a separate inquiry.

Sallis has been living at different addresses in Woodingdean since his released from prison in October.

He is 5ft 10in and stocky with short brown hair.

He is blind in one eye and has a local accent. He was released from prison in October.

He has no fixed address but is said to have links to Woodingdean, Hove and Southwick.

Five-year sentence

In 2009 Sallis, then of Stonery Road, Portslade, admitted raiding 13 Co-ops and other stores, stealing cigarettes and tobacco worth more than £40,000.

He was jailed for five years and given another 12 months for dangerous driving which happened during the car chase after which he was arrested.

At times he was carrying out two raids a night, with branches in Arundel, Angmering, Brighton, Hove, Hurstpierpoint, Partridge Green and Worthing among those targeted.

In court, he asked for 24 similar raids to be taken into consideration.

Multiple convictions

He had 20 previous convictions for 46 offences.

A judge branded Sallis and his co-defendant, Zak Marsden, then 20, “professional criminals”.

Marsden was jailed for three years. Last year he was sent back to prison for five years for conspiring to rob a post office cash delivery in Bevendean in August 2011.

Sallis appears to have established himself in a profession that he's comfortable with. Too bad that it's doing something illegal, but prison appears to be no deterrent. If only more workers were so diligent!

Yer right what so he can get sent back to prison for missing an appointment with probation the police and the argus have lost the plot there is some real dangeres people on the run in sussex who are a real danger to the public and little boys and girls who play in parks and streets and they waste their time on some one who is no danger at all to the public

Also why would he hand him self in when he's making sussex police look stupid and showing the public how they waste their money on not protecting the public no surrender

I am not a police officer and nor do I agree with you in calling this man crap. Obviously he is an idiot and anti social, but I am sure he has the potential to be a reasonable human being. Crap should just be left to rot.

As Daniel Sallis has been sent down previously for assualt, to me he clearly is a danger to the public and the sooner he is put away the better. It is probably only luck that some security guard has not been assaulted during one of his many raids and only a matter of time before this happens. If you are a friend of his, it would be more productive to help Daniel to move on from the criminal life rather than mock the police as he is sadly wasting his life in prison, something he will come to regret.

I would just like to say as his auntie that alot of people are slating dan ie like the pratt above this " the comment in blue" when they dont know him at all, only what they hear from "THE POLICE" and if the POLICE said it then it must be true hey, even the police can exaggerate facts you know just so someone may turn him in. They've even taken to pulling friends and family up in a bid to trace him. thinking of you dan. x
