Health worker arrested over hospital rape claim

A HOSPITAL patient has told staff she was raped by a male health worker at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

The woman in her 20s told hospital staff she had been attacked overnight between Wednesday (Jan 9) and Thursday (Jan 10).

A 29-year-old man from Chichester was arrested on suspicion of rape on Thursday evening and remains in custody where he is being interviewed.

A full police investigation to clarify the circumstances is ongoing.

The suspect is not a doctor or a nurse.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Wardley-Wilkins from the West Sussex CID said: "We are in the early stages of a full investigation.

"Officers are continuing their enquiries and are receiving full cooperation from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust.

"The victim is receiving help and support from specially trained police officers."

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should call Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Jura.
