A crackdown scheme on vans parking on grass verges has been welcomed.

As part of its 2013/14 budget plans, Brighton and Hove City Council wants to take advantage of new Government rules and use £125,000 to set up two pilot schemes to clamp down on those mounting the kerb and leaving their cars there.

Any motorist caught in the dedicated zone at any time could be fined up to £70.The pilots, which will not start until after April, are due to be in Mile Oak, Portslade and areas of Patcham and Withdean.

Patcham ward councillor Geoffrey Theobald welcomed the move adding there had been an issue with van dwellers in Surrenden Road area of Brighton.

He added it took weeks for the local authority to move them on, sometimes through court orders, with the vehicles then just moving to neighbouring streets.

Coun Theobald said: “We have been asking for the Council and Police to take this issue seriously for some time and I’m pleased that they are now listening to local residents’ concerns.”
