A blanket of snow up to 10cm deep has been forecast to settle on Sussex today.

Drivers are being warned to only make essential journeys as heavy snow is forecast this evening across the county.

The Met Office has put Sussex on an orange severe weather warning for snow, meaning it is likely to fall heavily across the county, causing a number of roads to be closed and others to be passable only with care.

A further yellow alert for snow has been issued from Saturday to midday Sunday, with residents asked to “be aware” of the conditions.

The Highways Agency has advised drivers to only venture out if necessary.

Steve Crosthwaite, the head of the agency's National Traffic Operations Centre, said: “We suggest people consider whether their journey is essential."
