South East Coast Ambulance Service has praised the efforts of its staff, volunteers and the support of the public during the recent snowy weather.
Here's their top tips for getting through the cold snap:
• Wear a few thin layers when you go out so they can easily be removed as you warm up or enter warm shops or buildings. A few thin layers will also keep you warmer than one or two thick layers
.
• If it is icy or wet outside take extra care, especially when walking or driving. Leave yourself longer to get where you need to be and if you are walking, wear shoes that have a grip rather than smooth soles.
• Check on elderly and vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.
• Consider the full range of NHS services available such as visiting pharmacies, NHS walk-in centres and contacting NHS Direct rather then automatically calling 999 or visiting their GP or local A&E.
• If you take regular or prescription medications make sure that you have a large enough supply to keep you going – and remember to keep taking them
• Make sure that you know in advance the telephone number for your local out-of-hours doctor and dentist. Your local surgery or regular dentist should be able to provide you with this information.
6:18pm

WRAP UP WARM
Temperatures are expected to be -4C tonight.
But the majority of the snow is over for the time being.
A Met Office spokesman said: “It looks as though the snow today will have moved north. Sussex will be mostly dry but there will be a risk of sleet and snow in the afternoon.
“Tomorrow morning will be dry.
“But because of the temperatures being below freezing overnight what you snow you will get now will be freezing.”
“What snow you’ve got will freeze. So be careful on the roads.”
1:38pm
We asked you if you were fed up with the snow in our poll.
And as it stands, the majority of you are with 56% thinking it's snow joke anymore.

The University of Sussex is operating the minimum of services today because of the snow.
The library will open today from 11.30am to 3.30pm.
But in the event of significant worsening of weather conditions they may need to close earlier and aim to give at least an hour's notice.
Bramber House catering is open for breakfast, hot drinks & snacks. It will remain open until 4pm unless the weather gets significantly worse.
But sports services will not be open today in light of worsening conditions.
Computers will be available in Shawcross and other 24-hour computer rooms on the campus throughout the weekend and are accessible using keycodes.

The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning for ice in the south east until midday, and then snow for the rest of Sunday.
There is also a yellow severe weather warning for ice on Monday until midday.
The Met Office warned: "Although some further slight snowfalls are likely, with 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow in a few places, the focus switches to ice, with near or sub-zero temperatures persisting quite widely.
"This is particularly the case over existing snow cover, where some very low night-time temperatures are possible, should skies clear.
"The public should be aware of the risk of localised difficult travel conditions due either to existing snow cover, or to icy surfaces."

CURRENT COUNCIL STATEMENT:
All our gritters have been treating the city's roads overnight using a salt/grit mix. The snow isn't deep enough to warrant ploughing so the gritters have done two runs overnight.
Although main roads are clear, some outlying areas are experiencing difficulties with icy roads. Ditchling Beacon and Saddlescoombe Road are currently closed. Please take care if you have to travel.
Our Cityclean staff have carried out pavement gritting on main city thoroughfares and around hospitals. They are out this morning focussing on more hilly areas in Patcham, Woodingdean, Hanover, Coldean and Bevendean to clear those local thoroughfares.
With over 700 miles of pavements in the city its not possible for us to treat them all. You can find the location of your nearest grit bin below.
All refuse and recycling crews were recalled yesterday because of the worsening conditions. Staff were transferred to gritting duties. Any roads that do not receive their refuse or recycling collections will be moved to next week and we will aim to collect all outstanding refuse and recycling by Friday 25 January.
All the city's libraries are open for business as normal today except for Westdene and Coldean. For more information visit the libraries website.
Other council services may be affected by the weather, for more information please visit their web pages:
1:42pm
From the city council: Adverse weather info 19 Jan: Almost all our city libraries are open for business as normal today, including the mobile.
Just two closures: Westdene will be closed today:- 10am-1pm and 2pm-4pm. Coldean will be closed today:- 10am-1pm
All other libraries will open normal times including the mobile library unless the roads are impassable upon arrival.

So it's not safe for kids to be in school, but it is ok for them to be racing around at the side of roads chucking snow at traffic and people causing risk to life and property. Use your brains parents, keep them in the garden or take them to play somewhere safe. Can't believe that schools and companies close because of a couple of inches of snow.
Parent - keep your bloody kids off the streets. Stop them throwing snowballs at cars and people. I wonder how many adults will be arrested for giving some kids a clip round the ear, or putting a hose on them?! I have seen that before.

I understand the "Patcham/Hollingbury Moaners" are at it again about a lack of buses going up there? Perhaps if a 10 ton bus (Minimum) slid into thier car or house then they would probably understand why they are not going up there?? SAFTEY! Most new buses now are automatic and in ice & snow they are unpredictable on hills. Give us a break people... we risk travelling to get to work to try and get you home as safely as possible and all you do is give us a hard time for following safety instructions from our control and the police. A hard day/night over. Nuff said. WWB.

On Friday at 6.35pm one articulated lorry and one car crashed on teh A27 eastbound at Hollingbury, Brighton.
No one injured. Recorvery called, according to fire.
10:05am
There was a crash in Horam last night.
The crash took place outside The May Garland Public House at 7.04pm.
Three private motor vehicles crashed.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue said two people were medically trapped. There were released to the ambulance.
10:01am
As snow moves across the county, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has a number of proactive measures to ensure that we continue to respond to any type of emergency.
Service contingency plans include snow chains for large fire appliances and snow socks for smaller service vehicles, along with the use of 4 x 4 vehicles, to ensure firefighters and operational officers can attend incidents even in the most remote of situations.
Mark Rist, Head of Operational Planning and Policy, said: “East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service works closely with other partner agencies through the Sussex Resilience Forum.
“We have extremely effective contingency plans for adverse weather conditions and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service will use our operational capacity to ensure the safety of our community and support other emergency services as required.”
East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind drivers that when driving in snow and ice you will need to change the way you drive. Your vehicle will not start, stop or steer in the same way it usually does. Stopping distances are greatly increased in icy conditions, so slow down and keep a bigger distance between you and the vehicle in front. Brake or accelerate carefully and gradually, and take corners very slowly.
If you’re planning a long journey – or if the snow really starts to settle – make sure that you check the weather forecast before you set out. The Met Office carries regularly updated feeds showing likely weather conditions, as well as any warnings.
It is also advisable to carry an emergency pack in your boot - a first aid kit, torch, blanket, food and drink, a tow rope and shovel could all come in useful if you do find yourself getting stuck. Also make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone and water proof shoes.
Cyclists and pedestrians also need to ensure that they can be seen by other road users – wear something bright, cross the road at designated crossing points and, for cyclists, ride where you can be seen.
As it is unclear how long the cold weather is going to last we would remind people to check on their more vulnerable neighbours to ensure they are safe and warm

BRIGHTON AND HOVE BUS UPDATE
Service 29 is now able to operate through to Tunbridge Wells (although not via Whitehill).
However it will be around 4pm before the first bus will reach Tunbridge Wells and be ready to return to Brighton. The full list of disruption is as follows:
Services 1 and 1A are operating between Portslade Health Centre and Whitehawk Bus Garage only.
Services 2 and 2A is operating between Shoreham and Old Steine only. We are not able to operate beyond the Old Steine towards Woodingdean, nor can we reach Steyning.
Services 5, 5A and 5B are unable to reach Hangleton, Patcham or Hollingbury and are operating between Sackville Road (Hove Park Tavern) and London Road, Black Lion (on the A23)
Service 6 is unable to serve the Downs Park and Foredown Drive areas so is operating between Sainsbury's and Brighton Station direct via the Hangleton Link Road.
Service 7 is operating normally.
Coast Road services 12, 12A, 14 and 14C are running normally (except that the 14/14C is not operating between Hangleton and Churchill Square).
Services 21, 22, 24, and 26 are not operating at all as we cannot reach Manor Hill, Elm Grove, Queen's Park, Woodingdean, Coldean, Ditchling Road, Hollingbury or the University campuses.
Service 23 will be shortly be operating between the Marina and Falmer Station (but not going into the campuses, and via Edward Street and Grand Parade instead of Queen's Park Road)
Service 25 will be shortly be operating between Palmeira Square and Falmer Station (but not going into the campuses)
Service 27 is operating between Dyke Road Avenue and Saltdean Lido only. It is unable to serve West Dene or Saltdean, beyond the Lido.
Service 28 is running normally - although the road between Brighton and Lewes is very congested.
Service 29 is operating its full route, except not via Whitehill. NOTE: this has just resumed and the first bus from Tunbridge Wells will be around 4pm.
Service 37 is unable to serve Bristol Estate but is continuing to run through Kemp Town.
Service 38 is not able to operate at all.
Service 46 is not able to serve North Southwick or Southwick Square so is operating from the Holmbush Centre, via Old Shoreham Road, then normal route as far as the Open Market.
Services 48 and 49 are terminating at the bottom of The Avenue as they are not able to serve Bevendean or Moulsecoomb.
Service 50 is terminating at Upper Hollingdean Road by Roedale Road as it is unable to reach any further into Hollingdean.
Service 55 will not be running this afternoon.
Service 81 is now not operating at all.
Unfortunately the snow is not thick enough to enable us to safely use snow chains. We are checking all parts of the city and will get buses back on their normal routes as soon as we can. There is severe traffic congestion in the city centre too which is causing delays to buses which are running.
3:16pm
How have your vulnerable neighbours been getting on today? If you haven't already, why not pay them a quick visit to ensure they are safe and warm?

Brighton and Hove City Council give an update on their services
They said on Twitter: "Cityclean staff have been out since early this morning carrying out pavement gritting on main city thoroughfares & around hospitals.
"The snow fall is due to get lighter later this afternoon so we'll go out again at 6pm on full routes with ploughs & then re-grit.
"Most gritters completed at least half their routes but do have to contend with traffic so this has impact on how soon they get to locations"
"They are carrying out a 40g salt/grit mix spread. Salt for melting the snow, grit to give traction and break down the layers"

BRIGHTON AND HOVE - update
Brighton and Hove City Council has just tweeted: "All of our street cleaning teams are now out gritting.
"We're prioritising pavement gritting in the city centre."
A statement on its website added:
"All our gritters are out treating the city's roads. Most have completed at least half their routes but do have to contend with traffic so this will have an impact on how soon they can get to each location.
"They are carrying out a 40g salt/grit mix spread. Salt for melting the snow, grit to give traction and break down the layers.
"The snow is due to get lighter later this afternoon so we will go out again at 6pm on our full routes with the ploughs and then re-grit.
"Cityclean staff have been out since early this morning carrying out pavement gritting on main city thoroughfares and around hospitals. The pavement gritter went to Patcham & Woodingdean.
"With over 700 miles of pavements in the city its not possible for us to treat them all.
"As the snow is still continuing, it will mean that much of our efforts will be covered over.
"We will carry out targeted hand-gritting in response to specific requirements (eg to help a fire tender that is stuck) rather than continuing with pavement treatment that isn’t very useful at the moment."

UPDATE FROM THE MET OFFICE - AROUND 3-5cm HAS FALLEN IN SUSSEX
A spokesman told The Argus: "The snow should clear from around 6pm, with a couple more flakes possibly falling as we head into the night and early part of Saturday morning.
"The persistence of snow will ease as we go through the course of today. By dinner time tonight it will mostly have cleared through, with light rain expected.
"There will be a couple centimetres of snow lying around tomorrow morning and temperatures will dip below freezing overnight.
"Be weary of potentially hazardous ice over the next few days."

1:07pm
Sussex Police has released advice on how to handle the snow.
Superintendent Grenville Wilson of Sussex Police’s Operations Department said:
“As snow starts to affect the county Sussex Police is working closely with its partner agencies to ensure there is as little disruption as possible.
“Drivers are reminded to check the weather forecast for the entire length of your journey before setting out and only make a journey if absolutely necessary.
“Completely clear your windscreen of ice and snow before driving and check that your vehicle’s lights are working.
“Carry an emergency pack in your boot - a first aid kit, torch, blanket, food and drink, a tow rope and shovel could all come in useful if you do find yourself getting stuck. Also make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone and water proof shoes.
“When driving in snow and ice you will need to change the way you drive. Your vehicle will not start, stop or steer in the same way it usually does. Stopping distances are greatly increased in icy conditions, so slow down and keep a bigger distance between you and the vehicle in front. Brake or accelerate carefully and gradually, and take corners very slowly.
“Pedestrians and cyclists should also ensure they have high visibility clothing to ensure they are seen by drivers.
“As it is unclear how long the cold weather is going to last we would remind people to check on their more vulnerable neighbours to ensure they are safe and warm.”

Lovely story from Blatchington Mill school in Hove:
Having dismissed the students and staff due to the worsening weather conditions, Blatchington Mill School was faced with a canteen full of baguettes, fruit salads and pasta salads set to be served out to the students at breaktime.
Rather than see this fresh food thrown away, the school contacted First Base, which is a Day Centre for homeless people.
The food was delivered to their door by Blatch and is to be served tonight to the thirty people who First Base are providing emergency night shelter for during these freezing conditions.
Headteacher Janet Felkin thanked the catering staff for their quick action and the staff who transported it down to the centre.
Ms Felkin said: “It is important for us to help those in our local community and we did not want to see this food go to waste. Our hope is that this small token will be of some help to those who find themselves vulnerable during these Winter months.”
Ms Felkin sent out a message to all other schools in the area who might also be able to make such a contribution and hoped that this policy will be implemented in the future should similar circumstances arise.

COUNCIL UPDATE
Brighton and Hove City Council is encouraging people to "shovel, sweep, salt" to clear the roads and pavements in the area.
"We encourage residents to 'shovel, sweep, salt' to clear pavements and paths when it snows as it is much easier to do before the snow freezes. Government advice states it is legally safe for people to do this.
"We recommend you concentrate on steps and slopes and clear snow early in the day to let any sun melt the underlying ice. Avoid piling snow in the way of roads and footpaths.
"Table salt can be used to treat surfaces. One tablespoon will treat one square metre. Grit and salt should be used, not hot water which can re-freeze."

SUSSEX POLICE - statement
As snow moves across the county, Sussex Police is offering advice on how to stay safe.
Superintendent Grenville Wilson of Sussex Police's Operations Department said: "As snow starts to affect the county Sussex Police is working closely with its partner agencies to ensure there is as little disruption as possible.
"Drivers are reminded to check the weather forecast for the entire length of your journey before setting out and only make a journey if absolutely necessary.
"Completely clear your windscreen of ice and snow before driving and check that your vehicle's lights are working.
"Carry an emergency pack in your boot - a first aid kit, torch, blanket, food and drink, a tow rope and shovel could all come in useful if you do find yourself getting stuck. Also make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone and water proof shoes.
"When driving in snow and ice you will need to change the way you drive. Your vehicle will not start, stop or steer in the same way it usually does. Stopping distances are greatly increased in icy conditions, so slow down and keep a bigger distance between you and the vehicle in front. Brake or accelerate carefully and gradually, and take corners very slowly.
"Pedestrians and cyclists should also ensure they have high visibility clothing to ensure they are seen by drivers.
"As it is unclear how long the cold weather is going to last we would remind people to check on their more vulnerable neighbours to ensure they are safe and warm."

BRIGHTON AND HOVE CITY COUNCIL - Call for 4 x 4 drivers
During severe weather in the past, owners of 4 x 4 vehicles have come forward to help the council deliver essential services such as meals or medicine, home care staff and district nurses, to residents who were out of reach with normal vehicles.
We are always looking to have a list of people we can call on if needed. If you are able to volunteer or would like more information, please email Icanhelp@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
Volunteers will only be used when the bad weather conditions are likely to run for several days, and the demand for 4 x 4 vehicles exceeds the number of vehicles currently available to the council, police, fire and ambulance services.

"The snow’s starting to come down really hard now and it’s settling, although the roads are still clear because the traffic is stopping it from settling.
"But there’s also a fierce wind that blows the snow painfully into your face if you have to look into it. I could barely see as the snow actually hits your eyeballs with force."

BRIGHTON AND HOVE
No reported school closures. However Birghton and Hove City Council has the following information:
"We understand that school closures pose an inconvenience to parents, but the safety of pupils, staff and visitors is of paramount importance.
"Closing a school is never an easy option. They should remain open wherever possible, with closure always considered as the last resort and every effort made to give adequate notice of closures to parents and guardians.
"Before making the decision to close, head teachers undertake a rigorous risk assessment and decide if there is significant risk of severe injury, ill health or inability to comply with relevant legislation.
"A decision is taken on the basis of weather forecasts and on-the-spot observations and this is why closures are often decided on the morning itself."

Southeastern, which operates trains between London and East Sussex, has issued the following press statement:
The first early morning train services are running normally – as the snow forecast for today hasn’t yet arrived in this part of the UK.
Network Rail de-icer trains have been running on the network through the night – and additional staff will be at larger stations this morning helping to clear snow from platforms and stairs.
Passengers are advised to check for live travel information before travelling today and allow additional time when making a journey.
A Southeastern spokesman said: “We’re reliant on Network Rail clearing the tracks and ensuring points and signals don’t freeze up so we can run a train service.
"Given the weather forecast, there may be disruption on some routes through the day.
"Our staff will be out working to clear platforms and treat icy surfaces and Network Rail will be running snow and ice clearance trains day and night to help keep the network open.
“We’re advising all passengers to check before travelling to see if train times have been altered, allow plenty of extra time and take extra care on the slippery roads and footpaths.”
For live travel information, visit the www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/liverunning.

MET OFFICE - latest
Remaining very cold with icy conditions across all but the far southwest of England throughout the period. Temperatures will be close to average across Cornwall and west Devon for much of the period. A band of snow is expected to move across the whole country on Friday, bringing widespread snow accumulations and leaving icy conditions to all areas excluding western Cornwall. Further snow showers are expected on Saturday away from the southwest, particularly along east coast areas, retaining the risk of ice. Lighter snow showers on Sunday midlands northwards. Strong winds at times across the country will make it feel bitterly cold.
Advice: Prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for the very young, very old or those with chronic diseases.
If you want more information about how cold weather can affect your health please visit www.nhs.uk. If you are concerned about your health or somebody you care for, please contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647, www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or your local pharmacist.

Brighton and Hove CIty Council statement
We're currently experiencing a cold snap and there is a risk of snow and ice today, Friday 18 January. The cold temperatures are forecast to continue over the weekend so the roads are likely to be icy over the next few days.
Our gritters have been out spreading salt overnight and we are ready to grit and salt during any severe weather over the weekend. As always, we will continue to monitor the situation and do further road treatments when necessary.
Due to the cold weather, our rough sleepers team is providing extra help to homeless people in the city. You can let them know about rough sleepers by calling 0808 1680414 (free phone number) or by emailing brighton.rsssrt@cri.org.uk. Help is also available to residents through the warm homes, healthy people scheme.
Seafront vehicles are now being made available to staff in adult social care. These will be used, if needed, to gain access to any hard to reach areas.

A blanket of snow up to 10cm deep has been forecast to settle on Sussex today.
Drivers are being warned to only make essential journeys as heavy snow is forecast this evening across the county.
The Met Office has put Sussex on an orange severe weather warning for snow, meaning it is likely to fall heavily across the county, causing a number of roads to be closed and others to be passable only with care.
A further yellow alert for snow has been issued from Saturday to midday Sunday, with residents asked to “be aware” of the conditions.

, message clear and understood but it IS every time there is a bit of snow that Patcham and Hollingbury not forgetting Coldean, that they get cut off.Isn't it about time that the council got the outline districts roads sorted. or should that be "salted" to keep it clear. No matter what they may say, they don't until too late. Have to wonder what they will do if they move the bus depot, as proposed, to Hollingbury. May only be a few days a year but there will be mayhem, not that there won't be anyway,if it does go there, not the ideal place by any stretch of imagination.
