Crime down 27% in Sussex past five years

Crime has fallen by more than a quarter in five years, according to Sussex Police.

But senior officers fear the economy has led to a large rise in burglaries.

And the Office for National Statistics is questioning whether the true rate of decline is half that recorded by police forces.

According to the most recent crime figures there was a 27.5% decrease in crime in Sussex between 2006 and 2011.

In the 12 months leading up to September, police recorded a 3% year-on-year fall, to 93,821 crimes.

The notable exception to a general fall in crime was a 13% rise in burglaries at homes. So-called “other theft” – which includes pickpocketing, shoplifting, bicycle theft and handling stolen goods – went up 5% and fraud rose by 8%.

Sussex Police Deputy Chief Constable Giles York said: “Sussex remains the seventh safest county nationally for burglaries of people’s homes.

“We are beginning to see a rise in acquisitive crime – burglary and theft – reflecting historical trends during other periods of economic downturn.

Arrests

“Burglary in particular has shown a rise after years of continuing reduction. We have experienced a targeted series of burglaries in areas of West Sussex and in Brighton and Hove and have made a number of arrests in connection with these.”

He advised the public to report suspicious behaviour and to keep expensive items like laptops and jewellery security-marked and out of sight.

A report published by the Office for National Statistics yesterday said that crime recorded by police had fallen by 33% since 2006, while the estimation from the independent Crime Survey for England and Wales was only 17%.

Councillor Ben Duncan, who represents Brighton and Hove City Council on Sussex Police and Crime Panel, the body which scrutinises the commissioner’s office, said: “My view is if you want to get to the bottom of anything you want to get figures from someone who hasn’t got a vested interest in what those figures are saying.

“I don’t doubt the police have been above board in the way they collect the figures, but I’d be more inclined to look at the Crime Survey for England and Wales.”

maybe more like people not report as much as never get much help as no staff free. when my mum come home to find someone in her home no one turned up in Worthing for nearly 20 mins i got there from lancing before they did after calling me. when she said she thought she know who it is after seeing them in street they did not want to know even when had some of his hair and DNA from window. im sure he done some other homes in worthing by now finger crossed gets locked up.

But they can get 20 officers to me in three mins for shouting out a window at a man that had been making threats to me and some women in the block where i live.Thats right just three mins 20 officers can get to Saltdean.But St,james,london road,or the drug dealers play ground western road Hove & you will never see them.Maybe they will drive up St,james street once or twice a night in one of there nice new cars then go back to Asda at the marina.The guy that was making threats to kill me & the women that lives near me.Well they dropped the charge on him.Her brother & friend got over once to help her before the police could get there.Within a week they fit me up with a public order offence.We have had 4 big murder trials in the Argus over the last few mths.In all 4 cases there was talk about Liverpool drug gangs.But we never read about the police taking the gangs out.Maybe the odd story about them putting the door in for party drugs lol.We are told almost every week in the Argus how bad the drugs world is in Brighton.They claim there is about three thousand victims on smack & crack in the city,"sorry thats what they are victims most of them."So if that is the case how many dealers does that make?

Crime will continue to fall due to cuts. Police stations are closing across the county and police officer numbers are at there lowest for a decade so how are people expected to report crime if there's no one to report it to?

This coupled with the way the Home Office rules manipulate crime recording will ensure that the same lies peddled by the Home Secretary (crime going down, public confidence in police high) will continue.

Let's not forget we have the softest court in the country in Lewes

Personally I have no friends in the police, so not sure what your point is there. I live Kemp Town, go out in Kemp Town and other areas of the city and rarely see any problems. We can all provide anecdotal evidence of a crime we've witnessed, who hasn't witnessed a crime, but you actually use others peoples anecdotes to prove your point. You weren't even there, but appear to believe anything that allows you to peddle your own agenda. To use such anecdotes to claim Brighton is dangerous and the police are useless is alarmist in the extreme.

Ask the people in Hove that had the cars set on fire.Plus read the posts.Im sure it is ok in your little mews.Yes the police will work for people like you with millions.But do nothing for the poor young women that sell their bodys in western road late at night.Read one guys post from Daivdor road."The thug was in my home,i even had some of his hair."But know sign of the police.The old lady killed in the Drive Hove only a few weeks back had called the police for help only a few days before she died.

Only this week in the Argus,"Police sergeant keeps his job after string of complaints."We was not aload to post yet again.Thats about 28 officers in the last 12mths.Most keep their jobs,and all of them keep the very good pension they all get.

I don't have millions. I don't live in a Mews. I live in a council flat near Lavender Street. You appear very quick to judge without knowing facts, about me and this story. Quoting every crime that's reported in The Argus, most of which are the more horrific crimes, does not prove this story wrong i.e. that crime overall is falling.

I say again read the second story and the posts about the cars set on fire in Hove.One young lady has said she walks home every night but never gets to see a police car.I drive home almost every night from family in Hove and always see the young women selling their bodys outside Nat West bank.I also see the drug dealers waiting to make their money out of them.Like some of the Shop owners and staff posted after the murder trial in Norfork sq.I was not Judging you my friend i just wish i could live in your nice little world.

I don't know why you have such a huge chip on your shoulder but you really need to get over it, rather than posting your hate online at 3am.
The best articles on this site are the ones with "police" in the title, they always bring the shallow end of the gene pool to the surface in the comments section for the rest of us to laugh at

Still can't anser the points i make above.How about the couple by the pier that witnessed 15 Asian guys trying to get hold of young girls.What did you do for them?Almost got them killed thats what.Or the young lady that lives over the way from me.Her boyfriend gives her a good kick in but you lot let him out the next day without charge yet again.Me and some old lady have to go in and clean up all the glass,and the poor girl is just left there crying her eyes out.The Daily Express sent me this,"Police give out 7,500 cautions for violent,drug,and sex crimes."I also watched the show on the BBC last year that showed all the poor souls let down by you lot.Some of the most voilent crimes you could think of,and i mean voilent.What did the police dish out a caution lol.Some honest brave policemen & women gave the reason why this happens.One is to keep the courts happy because the prisons are full.But the main reason is because it makes the paper work look good as it all goes down as solved crime.Thats why you lot love the public order offence so much today.Its got a 98% conviction rate.Don't really take a lot of working out does it.Plus its all Magistrates court stuff so you are 100% going to win the case.

Posting my hate at 3am ha.So you now even think you have a right to tell me when i can sleep.Do you know the reason im awake then at that hour.It maybe because you lot don't do your jobs on a saturday night.They have a word for people like you.Its the reason we had to world wars against it.Looks like we didn't really win more by the day in this country.

AlanPare=(vile bent copper)You claim im deluded and naive to think the post on here represent most of the public.Ok but how many times do you read on here about the wonderful job the public think you lot are doing lol.I just drove home from Hove tonight along western road with a friend.We did not see one police car,but we did see a young lady selling her body at Nat West bank again and then run off down Sillwood road.Just two times around the block and we could see three dealers making a nice amount of money for themself.You would think after the cars set on fire you lot would be out and about lol.But not one police car not even in Sackville Rd.

Feared loser - I'm not a policeman. I run a gardening business and suppliment my income doing shifts in care homes and hostels. I have a question. When you passed the sex workers and drug dealers, as you report above, did you phone the Police?
