A man who woke to find 28 sheep on his doorstep has finally reunited the flock with a local farmer.

Mark Nicholas, of Cross in Hand, near Heathfield, got the fright of his life on Friday morning when he opened his front door to find that police had herded the lost sheep into his garden.

Despite being picked up by local media yesterday, the farmer was nowhere to be found.

But this morning (January 26), Mr Nicholas took to Twitter to announce that the owner had been tracked down.

In one post, he said: “Farmer Alec has taken the sheep away. He also made a good job of clearing up with his brother Les and friend Greg.”

He later added: “.And a bunch of flowers for my wife. Thank goodness #sheepgate is over. Thanks to everyone for their support.”

Hope they really rounded up all of them. You wouldn't want Basil to the the one that got away. He might rob Selfridges again! *music sting*

Why did he get the fright of his life? Do he and his wife not talk to each other? She was on the TV saying the police had asked if they could put the sheep in the garden because it has a decent gate. I'm sure if we had several sheep appear in our garden in the wee small hours, my husband would mention it!
It was thoughtful of the farmer to clear the garden up and give flowers - nice gesture.
