Updated: Brighton man sentenced to six years over drug smuggling charges
8:19am Tuesday 29th January 2013 in News
A Brighton man has been sentenced to six years in prison for receiving cocaine in Indonesia from a British grandmother who was sentenced to death last week.
Julian Ponder, of Eastern Terrace in Brighton, was found guilty of being an accomplice to 56-year-old Lindsay Sandiford and was sentenced this morning and fined £65,000.
He was arrested for his part in a drug smuggling ring accused of bringing £1.6 million of cocaine into Bali from Thailand last May.
His legal representative said Mr Ponder was being advised to accept and not appeal his sentence.

Interesting is that no one I know has ever heard of Ponder as an antiques dealer.
As a bankrupt, how could he afford properties here, there, and somewhere else?
Some investigative journalism is needed.

Yes, all true. The trial is an inconvenience, getting in the way of bribes and corruption. Appalling.
There's a website, Expendable.TV, which provides all the documentary proof you need. In that case, her government were to cowardly and corrupt themselves to do anything about it.

Again, in that case, the smear machine made the problem go away for the Australian government. Let's hope the UK is less corrupt (I'm sure it is).

What I do find strange though, is that Mr Ponder is only getting 6 years imprisonment whilst Ms Sandiford is getting the death penalty?
Shouldn't they both get the death penalty? Given that they are both complicit in the smuggling of drugs into Indonesia?

Did he buy himself out of the death penalty?
What's the back story?

After strenuous appeals, tireless work by the British consulate, and leniency shown by the country's King, the convicts sentence was commuted to the death.
