Support for Brighton group's anti-racism statement

Anti-racism campaigners are urging people to join their opposition to a nationalist march.

Brighton Unite Against Fascism has launched a “unity statement” against the planned return of the March for England on April 21.

It states: “In Brighton we all stand together. And when someone tries to threaten our community we must stand together even more firmly.”

Signatories so far include Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas, Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat, right, Green and Labour councillors, trade unionists and former council leader Simon Burgess.

Roland Ravenhill, of Brighton Love Music Hate Racism, said: “The diversity and unity of Brighton is something worth supporting and racist marches do not sit well here.

“We encourage people to read and sign the statement.”

At last year’s March for England anti-racist protesters prevented the police from escorting the march along its planned route in Queen’s Road.

Hundreds of counter-demonstrators lined the street to confront up to 140 nationalists from marching.

Police used horses, batons and pepper-spray as they escorted the march through the city.

A ten-year-old girl on the march was hit by a plastic bottle as missiles were hurled from the side of the road.

Police later issued an appeal to try to find protesters involved in alleged violence, but in November said there was not enough evidence to prosecute anyone.

The operation to police that event, on the weekend of the Queen’s Jubilee in June, was estimated to cost £340,000.

Maybe a March for England should be allowed to go ahead undisturbed .
Reading this in last weeks Argus , Maybe everyone should be able to
go freely where they want too.

“”Migrants have been warned to stay away from Brighton and Hove if they do not have a job or a place to stay.

Around a quarter of a million migrants from Bulgaria and Romania could move to the UK over the next five years after EU restrictions are lifted at the end of 2013.””

And Jason Kitwat wants £40k of my taxes so he can attend Marxist marches?

What an absolute waste of space this man is. The sooner he steps down the better.

He hates people like me, why?

I am white.

I have a job

I am lower middle class

I drive

I do not like gypsies

I do not protest about silly causes

I like being British

I like our heritage and Royal family.

The snot greens have more hate in them than the BNP or any Nationalist march will ever have. They really are a hateful and sinister bunch of work shy scum. And the fools who voted them in are lower than a eunuchs sex drive.

Why are people so threatened about a march through Brighton. Why are people so enthusiastic and so quick to brand and label those they disagree with. Fredom of speech is the sign of true democracy. Preventing those who you disagree with from speaking is dangerous and non democratic, look at Iran, look at China, I personally would not like to live under that yoke. Why are those who "March for England", branded racist, that's just lazy and ill considered, they appear to have an ideology, but what about that ideology is "rascist" let them March, without let or hinderance, let them march with pride.

Unite Against Fascism are just as intolerant as the BNP. I loathe the BNP but as long as they stay within the remit of the law, I support their right to freedom of speech, even if I disapprove of them and their policies.

UAF needs to understand that in a democracy, we don't need them to be the moral arbiters of what we can or cannot listen to.

The BNP are a joke, as most people realise, but the belief of UAF seems to be that the average person is too stupid to understand this, so UAF have to act on their behalf to ban the BNP

For once I agree with you, left wing fascists are no more acceptable than right wing fascists.
It is not acceptable to use violence to impose your views on others and it is hypocrisy of the highest order for the Green party to call on protest groups to make Brighton a centre of protest and to then support the use of violence to suppress peoples democratic right to protest.
Neither SmashEdo or UAF have a right to speak for Brighton on this matter.
It is worth noting that when muslim extremists were recently filming themselves spouting hate speech at gay people who dared to exist in a "muslim area" the reaction from all of those who have signed up to this statement opposing intolerance was zero, double standards on an epic scale. No marches were arranged no petitions organised no outraged letters warning of the dangers of intolerance. Tony Greenstein "author of fighting imaginary fascists in my head" didnt find it necessary to start another protest group, AndyR didnt protest nor did any of the other usual suspects.
I doubt there is more than a couple of people on the MFE who could actually explain what a fascist is. The left need something to define themselves as being opposed to or they become meaningless, like one hand clapping, so they are stuck in a 1930s time warp using outdated terms that no longer apply simply to give themselves meaning.

The reality is that this article is in fact an advert by the argus calling for more people to be at the protest.
The more people at the protest the greater the likelyhood of trouble breaking out and a nice juicy story for the argus.

Without publicity the march it would be a damp squib and no one would even realise it had taken place.

Quite so.

Where were Unite Against Fascism on Holocaust Memorial Day, when Muslim women where holding placards outside London synagogue's that had 'God Bless Hitler' wriiten on the front?

Where where Unite Against Fascism when Anjem Choudray, in a public speech in 2010, stated that (quote) "Gay men shot, Gay women should be beaten until they die"?

I abhor fascism and racism of all kinds; but I feel that the UAF hard-Left hypocrites are just as bad as the BNP hard-Right racists.

Both are as intolerant as each other

Factual errors in the Argus reporting: 'The operation to police that event, on the weekend of the Queen’s Jubilee in June, was estimated to cost £340,000.' No it didn't, the st georges event happened, on (or close to) St Georges Day. the police operation mentioned here is for the Jubilee three day weekend, which included a UKuncut demo, an anti-war demo and a Fat Boy Slim gig, as well as tiny number of racists turning up to cause trouble.

March for England,

English Defence League,

So in England we are expected to support and embrace all religions , races , and groups
except any group with England in the title .

First off - let's drop the lazy stereotyping of anyone who may have some inclination to actively be against racism. I'm a 55 year old father of 3, self-employed for 30 years, pay my taxes etc.
I was on the counter protest to last year's March for England & will be again this year & this is why.
MfE declare they are just 'patriots' celebrating St. George but last year's march contained many English Defence League faces. Since then the EDL's internal problems (& public opposition) have lost it a lot of the lads just out for a **** up & to annoy the locals. Those that remain are the hardcore who are now actively being courted by more overtly extreme rightwing nationalist groups.
April's event is already being widely circulated on their websites,
J Hunty says we're not living in the 1930's. Greece's Golden Dawn party with its anti-immigrant violence & fascistic logo now has 20 MPs. Newspaper reports today reveal its links with German neo-nazi groups.
The newly established English Golden Dawn have announced they will be marching in Brighton.
Last year over 500 Brighton people (of which only about 30 were UAF) came out to show the MfE it wasn't welcome. This year we need to do it again - patriotism is one thing but virulent nationalism has led to some very dark episodes in history.
