Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner wants a deputy

Katy Bourne, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, is planning to appoint Worthing councillor Steve Waight as her full-time deputy.

The announcement was made yesterday and is subject to confirmation at a Sussex Police and Crime Panel meeting on February 7.

Coun Waight is a borough and county councillor in Worthing and was chairman of Sussex Police Authority until it was replaced in November by the newly-created elected post of commissioner.

His salary as deputy commissioner will be £45,000 a year, paid from the commissioner's budget.

Mrs Bourne, whose salary is £85,000 a year, said: “Sussex is a large area and there are many calls on my time. I am convinced the support of a Deputy is absolutely necessary to help ensure I can do the best job possible for residents during my time in office.

“Steve’s experience and links with the local community as former chairman of the police authority and a local councillor will be an invaluable addition to the team.

“He will play a vital role in supporting me in working with the police, partners and the public to ensure we are all safer in Sussex.”

Mr Waight’s appointment is to be officially confirmed at the next meetin for the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, which scrutinises the Police and Crime Commissioner’s work, on February 7. The panel does not have the power to veto the appointment.

So why hasn't this well-paid public sector job been advertised and an appointment made through a fair and transparent recruitment process? Katy Bourne is clearly another hypocritical Tory tw*t.

Only a matter of time before the Job Creation Scheme became a reality. The whole thing is obviously exceedingly cost efficient compared to the old Police Authority system. I mean, no posts from the old Police Authority staff at their Lewes offices have been made redundant, there's the Police Commissioners salary (plus 25% on-costs, of course), plus the Deputy Commissioner of course (and on-costs), plus other bits and pieces which are being created in the background. Then of course you have the expenses and associated costs of the Police & Crime Panel, which is going to be much the same as those paid to the old members of the Police Authority. The Home Office view is that the P&CCs are "cost neutral" which is their traditional way of saying that the overall policing budget is much the same as it was before, which means that the extra cost of oversight of the police comes from operational police budgets. Or, put another way, compared to a year ago you will have several fewer police on the streets of Sussex than you did a year ago, simply because the money to fund the new "democratic" P&CC structures has to come from somewhere.

Good, isn't it? One thing's for sure, bureaucracy may change its name and its structure but it never diminishes in size and cost.

Funny that she didn't think of this beforehand? Did she look at a map of the county before climbing aboard this gravy train?

Should her friend Steve not have to apply for the job, alongside any other interested applicants?

Sheer nepotism. She already has a large staff. Perhaps the police might like to investigate this criminal waste of public money?

So someone who didn't even make it onto the tory shortlist of 6 for the head honcho's job is now suitable as a deputy?

Sounds like a bit of cronyism to me - and hardly likely to get anyones vote of confidence!

But since Bourne's contribution to the job so far is an A4 policy statement, I look forward to her deputy's contribution...Half the salary = an A5 scribble?

Another outrageous waste of money from the police budget, can only hope the next Government gets rid of these pointless commissioners

Many people are questioning Steve Waight's appointment, because its evident that all the old personnel of the replaced Sussex Police Authority are back at their desks.

Shouldn't the job of her deputy have been advertised?
Is Mr Waight really the best man for the job?
Does she need a Deputy to lessen her load (as she claims), considering she already has a team of 8 full time workers and a further 4 consultants.
(After all, all she has to do is draft a Police and Crime Plan once a year and set the Police Tax)

People are saying the election was rigged....

Isn't it time the people of Sussex got angry about this and started to ask for reform?

I've posted this to the commissioners facebook page

The Commissioner shows who's in control....pffft.

I complained to the Commissioner that contrary to her and Sussex Police statements on accountability and transparency that Sussex police have ignored a complaint I made to them over one year ago resulting in me taking legal action against them. The Commissioner advised that I should complain to Sussex Police that their Chief Constable has ignored my complaint.

Way to go Katy didn't you get the point "Sussex Police are ignoring complaints".
