Hundreds of women across Sussex are being urged to step out and show their support for charity.
Entry for the annual Breast Cancer Care Pink Ribbonwalk is now open and organisers are urging as many people as possible to take part.
Those signing up can choose to do either a 10 or 20 mile walk that starts and finishes at Petworth House and takes in surrounding villages and the Cowdray and Petworth estates.
The charity, in association with The Argus, is hoping to make the 2013 event on Saturday June 1 its biggest yet.
Among those taking part is Carole Parr, 55, from Hollingbury, Brighton, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001.
She went through chemotherapy and radiotherapy but the cancer returned in 2003 and she had to have a mastectomy.
Since then Mrs Parr has been determined to live life to the full and has taken up golfing and skiing.
She did her first Ribbon walk in 2006.
Mrs Parr, who is married to John, 55, said: “I’d been through all that treatment and I needed to do something to prove to myself that I was okay. I felt a great sense of achievement by the end of the 20 miles. It was my way of saying yes, you can beat this.”
Mrs Parr is now planning to do this year’s walk.
She said: “I’d urge as many women as possible to give it a go.
“There is a great atmosphere and you are outside, keeping yourself fit and seeing some beautiful scenery while raising money for a really important cause.”
Showing support
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and by pushing themselves to go the distance Pink Ribbonwalk participants can show their support for a loved one or help others living with the condition.
Pink Ribbonwalk manager Lucy Johnson said: “It is a fantastic event and we want to see as many people there as possible.
“Bring family, friends and colleagues together for a wonderful day in the beautiful Sussex countryside.
“You can help raise money for people affected by breast cancer and ensure that Breast Cancer Care can continue to provide free support services so that that no one faces a breast cancer diagnosis alone.”
It costs £30 to register to take part and walkers are required to raise a minimum of £175 worth of sponsorship to help fund the charity’s practical and emotional support services. To register visit www.pinkribbonwalk.org.uk or call 0870 145 0101.
