Doing their Level best for central Brighton space

A cherished city space will be celebrated at a special event.

A ‘memory day’ to share photos and memories of The Level in Brighton is being held in the Red Room at the Phoenix Gallery, Waterloo Place in Brighton on Friday, February 8 from 10am to 4pm.

The event is part of a history project being organised by Brighton & Hove City Council to capture people’s memories of The Level.

Images of The Level over the last 70 years are being compiled in an attempt to record the many events, both personal and public, that have occurred there.

These will then be used as part of an exhibition when work on the restoration of the park is completed this summer, as well as becoming a permanent record of the park’s heritage.

People are being encouraged to dig out old pictures and any other memorabilia connected with The Level, such as posters or flyers relating to past events, and drop in to the memory |day.

The event is open to all and recent memories and photos of the park are wanted, as well as older ones. Anyone can go along – even if they don’t have memorabilia – to recount their memories of The Level.

There will be free tea, coffee and refreshments.

Call me psychic, but I don't foresee anyone remembering a time in the Level's history when there was a concrete skate park on the northern open green, or a spanking 56 seater cafe, or fountains, or a 'sensory garden', or an art gallery, or a general public through route to St Peter's via the southern children's playground...

I mean, this extreme makeover has been billed as a '1920's restoration'. And, this 'restoration' is being funded by Heritage Lottery to the tune of £2.2 million pounds, right?

There used to be the big Circus's of the time I can't remember if it was Chipperfields or Billy Smarts that would have been Late 50's early 60s and great 5 a side football in the 60s

Will there be a part about remembering it before it became a complete mess?

Let's hope they kept back some money to police the 'new and improved' Level to prevent smacky and cracky and all the general winos from turning it into a no-go area again!

What's happened to the drainage? At the moment it looks like a swimming pool for seagulls!
