Fire at Rottingdean pub

A  moped rider raised the alarm after spotting a fire at a pub.

He was going past the Queen Victoria in the High Street, Rottingdean, shortly after 2am this morning when he saw flames flickering in the ground floor window.

The man banged on the door and woke up two men living in the flat above the pub.

They were then able to get out of the pub before the flames took hold.

The fire, which caused extensive damage,  is believed to have started accidentally.

Crews from Roedean and Preston Circus were able to stop the fire from spreading beyond the ground floor.

Roedean watch manager John Bradford said: “Luckily the alarm was raised by the moped rider so the people living at the pub were already out safely when we arrived.

“They were also able to get their two dogs out and there were concerns about their two cats but it is believed the managed to get out as well.

“The ground floor of the pub has been very badly damaged but fortunately nobody was hurt and we were able to contain it.”

Crews were at the scene until around 3.30am.
