Caroline Lucas picked again to fight for Brighton Pavilion seat

The country's first Green MP has been reselected to fight for her seat in the next general election.

Caroline Lucas has represented the people of Brighton Pavilion since her historic election in 2010.

After being chosen by the Greens unopposed to fight the seat in 2015, Dr Lucas pledged to campaign hard for a second term to “provide the strong independent voice for Brighton and Hove that people deserve at Westminster”.

Dr Lucas said: “Representing the people of Brighton Pavilion is an amazing privilege, and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to stand again in 2015 and continue my work.

“A crucial part of my role as MP is holding the Coalition Government to account over its chronic mishandling of the economy – and the failed austerity policies that are harming people and public services across this country.

“There is public anger about what the main political parties are doing to the economy and our public services – and people tell me that they value a strong independent voice in Brighton and Hove which offers a clear, green and progressive alternative.”

Dr Lucas won the seat with a majority of 1,252 over Labour’s Nancy Platts.

Her main challenge is again expected to come from Labour, which has not yet selected a candidate.

Jack Fellows, Labour’s campaign manager in Brighton and Hove, said: “The Green Party is worried about losing Pavilion after the last two years of mismanagement.”

Excellent news.

We are all relishing the prospect of throwing this irrelevance and her acolytes out at the ballot box - and the sooner the better.

Sorry, Caroline, but it's not an independent voice - it's still a party-political voice where your constituents' concerns are only raised when they tie in with Green party policies.

I have not been impressed with her at all - until today during the equal marriage debate where she showed common sense, gravitas and humanity. No ego on display and she was good.

Such a shame this is not shown in her everyday politics as I was really impressed with her today.

Might as well book her flight home now.

As she represents the people of Brighton Pavilion rather than the residents of Brighton & Hove, it is quite possible she might actually get back in!

I think the only way she'll get voted back in is if she shaves her eyebrows off and puffs her hairstyle out a bit

What: the absurd Tories with their failed ideas and failing economy are going to win? I think not!

I hope the Labour party don't use such a racist selection procedure this time. (Last time black men were barred from the selection procedure as Labour big-wigs thought the House of Commons needed more middle-class white people and Brighton wasn't ready for an MP from an ethnic minority)

During debates with residents of Patcham regarding to the proposed enlargement of the travelers camp in what is national park the greens insisted that they had a legal duty to make this provision for travelers which was correct at the time however after Eric Pickles revised the criteria giving the public, not the Council the final say so The The Greens have joined with Labour to veto putting this referendum to the residents of Brighton absolutely disgusting! We do not need any more of these travelers in Brighton and I believe that current public opinion against this camp alone will ensure that the Greens and Loony Lucas will be kicked out of Brighton for goodGreens and their cracpot policies

Ha ha! You lot are so funny. The Labour vote was only so high in the Brighton Pavilion constituency because so many didn't want the Tories and didn't have confidence that the Greens would get in! I was there at the polling stations and had this discussion with loads of people.

Caroline has been an incredibly effective as an MP; name me a Labour MP that has been so successful holding the government to account (I can name one who has done a **** good job by the way).

I would suggest that people check out

And I suppose you think Millipratt could have done any better? He of the party that screwed every aspect of the British economy, way of life, Treasury reserves, raided our pensions, invited all and sundry to feed off the land of plenty while we paid, are still paying and will continue to do so for a long long time to come! Some people have very short memories, or have little grasp of how we ended up in this state in the first place!

Socialists and left-wingers only vote for people that give them free hand-outs at everyone else's expense. Whilst the Greens would like to do that, they are not in a position to do so. Labour on the other hand show no signs of having learned from last time, indeed, two of the architects of the last Labour disaster are now in charge of the party - Milibandwagon and Balls-up. So expect Labour to re-take the seat from the Greens.
