Hundreds call for crossing near Brighton college

Hundreds of people are calling for a new road crossing near a busy college.

Rohan Lowe, of Brighton and Hove Youth Council, presented a petition of more than 550 signatures to Brighton and Hove City Council calling for measures in Pelham Street.

The area is considered dangerous by those attending City College Brighton and Hove as people cross from building to building.

Mr Lowe said: “This is due to high traffic and reckless speed from some drivers. Many near misses have already taken place and it’s only a matter of time before something more serious occurs.”

The petition has been referred to the council’s next transport committee meeting.

If they are looking at new crossings, I hope they will bear in mind that not all pavement users are pedestrians. Some of us trundle a wheelchair.

My Autistic son is a disabled student studying at the college. His sense of danger is very poor. He has to cross this road to get from Pelham tower to the Trafalgar building. I think the council has a duty to support disabled learners at the college and this should include their safety. I hope that transport committee will address this and install a very much needed crossing

I'm not sure where the new crossing is being suggested, but whenever I've walked along Pelham Street the large quantity of students standing on the pavements smoking has forced me to walk along the road in order to get around them. Other pedestrians, whether students on not, clearly hav ethe same problem. Maybe it's just the time of day but I've never seen any great quantity of traffic in Pelham Street.

Based on my experience walking along that road, I'd agree 100%.

Easy to get lots of signatures from the students there of course, and I note the petition came from the B&H Youth Council (is that an ageist organisation, or can anyone join?.....)

I often have to trundle up from London Road towards Halfords in my wheelchair and I can assure you that it is a nightmare stretch of road for mobility and otherwise impaired pedestrians.

I'll grant you that students can be a tad of a problem but in the main the primary cause of issues there is the horrid pavements, the lack of proper kerbing and yes, some of the cars turning up there can be rather speedy asw tyhe drivers try and beat the traffic lights at the junction of New England st./Whitecross st./Cheapside ...

Perhaps speed humps as well would be appropriate. I suspect the car drivers in question are silly students showing off. Closing the car park there would help to reduce traffic. Students shouldn't be travelling there by car.

I always look to see the drivers. They are a mixed bunch with both trade vehicles, taxi and other drivers ... few indeed that I would call typical of the student age group ...

Don't forget that that stretch leads not only to the Halfords MOT garage but also to the train station pick-up and drop off point.

It shows how times have changed. When I was a student at Brighton Technical College between 1979 & 1981 there were hardly any cars at all and none of the students on my course had a car or drove & about 70% of the students were very rich, from abroad, so had the money to do so.

None of us ever hung around the road and no one smoked.

Isn't it a shame that young people today are being given the money to smoke by their parents - seems to be a bit too much money & too little brain useage.

Good to hear the college has been made wheelchair accessible now as it certainly wasn't when I was there!

The road that runs between the two sites (buildings) is quite narrow and a junction to the north is quite close, so cars should not have built up any great speed, especially at times when there are loads of people (students) about.

Other than that, the road is straight and not busy, surely any pedestrian would not have to wait long for a car to pass?

I look at those crossings over the much more busy London Road and see how pedestrians don't bother to use them. There are better things to spend restricted funds on.

Modern cars do not need that much time to build up speed ....

Have someone stand by, and whenever a student walks in front of a car without looking, TURN THE HOSES ON THEM!

I'm not sure a crossing is needed, but it is one of those narrow roads that should be a 20mph. You get taxis and other vehicles hurtling along it when there are hundreds of students milling around at lunchtime. Some of these drivers are extremely impatient and inconsiderate towards pedestrians. Or perhaps just shut the road to traffic and reroute via Whitecross St. Shouldn't make a major amount of difference to motorists taking the next turning instead of this one.
