Heather Mills to open new café branch in central Brighton
5:10pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in News By Tim Ridgway, Local government reporter
Heather Mills plans to open a branch of VBites in East Street, Brighton
Heather Mills looks set to open the second branch of her vegan café in Brighton.
The former model opened the first VBites venue in the former Big Fish Café at Hove Lagoon in July 2009.
Despite the park café not opening in the winter and receiving mixed reviews, it appears Paul McCartney’s former wife wants to spread her wings and expand her fledgling business in Brighton and Hove.
A licence has been issued for VBites to trade in the former Aloka spa and café store in East Street, Brighton.
This means, once refurbishment is complete, the café could freely operate.
According to information presented to Brighton and Hove City Council, the second floor will be converted into a place for live music and educational films.
The restaurant will be restricted to the ground and first floors.
In the Hove Lagoon café, meals range from meat substitute burgers and New York-style hotdogs to Mrs Swirly dairy-free soft scoop ice-creams.
Love affair
Many dishes feature meat substitutes made from plant-based ingredients from Redwood, Ms Mills’ food company.
Within a month, it was claimed between 700 and 1,000 vegan products were being sold at the cafe every day.
When launching her café, Ms Mills said: “I’ve always had a love affair with food, ever since I began cooking when I was nine.”
Aloka spa and café closed suddenly in September when a notice was put up in its window.
Mike Booth, chairman of parent company Aura Soma Products, said he was planning to open a new spa in the city but he was tight-lipped on where it will be and when it will open.
Transferred
Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed that the licence has now been transferred.
There are no restrictions on the opening time. However, recorded music can only be performed from 8am to midnight.
Alcohol can only be sold from midday to midnight, Monday to Saturday.
These are both restricted to 11.30pm on Sunday.
Ms Mills was unavailable to comment at the time of The Argus going to print.

Whist I wish Ms Mills success with her new venture in Brighton, I feel I have to grumble about the 'cafe' in Hove Lagoon. We used to take the children down to the Lagoon in the autumn / winter and have a a nice steaming mug of tea & cake and treat the kids to some chips or something similar. In the summer when we visited, they looked forward to ice creams. We visited VBites once to give it a chance. It looked very nice, but was very expensive and unappealing - I don't want to pay through the nose for a cup of tea with soya milk. I am not alone, I don't meet my friends there any longer if we are out for lunch. We prefer Hove & Buckingham Parks. Such a shame that this cafe is located in this popular park.

This cafe should serve the community 365 days a year and if anything without the cafe the Lagoon gets used less by the people it is meant to serve.
Give up the Lagoon Heather, V Bites is more suited to the high street and I am sure you will do much better there.

It's 5hit!
I don't have an issue if people want to be vegan but I do object to a cafe of that kind having a monopoly in a family play area like Hove Lagoon. We no longer spend any money there and take a picnic instead so I guess Ms Mills loss is Sainsburys gain.

The Lagoon cafe is only open six months of the year, hardly dedicated to the vegan cause. To educate people to veganism on a part time basis is an insult to this prime located cafe, some consistancey in a belief is key.

Hasn't she wasted enough of Sir Pauls money on pointless/tasteless ventures.
Why doesn't she just sell up and move somewhere else (far away)where they might appreciate her sort?
Does anybody in Brighton/Hove/Sussex actually like her? Really?

Your opposition of the skate park, somewhere the children of today are able to gather safely to enjoy a creative and healthy activity, rather than sitting in front of the tv or video game or loitering the streets says all we need to know about you I'm afraid. However bad the previous incarnation of the cafe was, it was a hugely popular Mecca for families and other locals. Regardless of however many 'fun' events hosted by it now, it's current popularity shows you're firmly in the minority. (Thankfully)
I think she deserves praise for taking over the big fish cafe on hove lagoon that was run down and a bit grubby. shame it is only open 6 months and she chose such a vile colour scheme, a muted driftwood seaside feel would have been better but hey ho the food is good and why should vegans not be catered for. hove lagoon has other cafes close by, blue lagoon bar, windsurf hut, lindas cafe and tiffanys on Kingsway etc. She has a lot of fun days on the lagoon for the community during the summer including music and kids events and a dog show. some people clearly just want to slag vbites off because they have no taste. what spoilt the lagoon from a peaceful place to be was the ugly skate park and all the mess it makes. good luck heather.

Your opposition to the skate park is at best bizarre and at worse ignorant. My kids always love to stop and watch the skaters and it's encouraged them to both go skating - a good healthy sport. Unfortunately too many old stick in the muds think it's some type of yob sport.

eople who don't fancy eating horse meat who will welcome a branch of this cafe in the centre of Brighton. If it doesn't work then it will close quick sharp, as do many unviable businesses. However, if it succeeds then good!, most high streets in Britain are collapsing.

There is virtually nowhere I would eat in Brighton, Hove or any other town for that matter. Lots of us have become civilised and no longer want to eat the dead bodies served up everywhere. I notice that many of you can only poke fun at Heather Mill's disability. It just.shows what cruel people you are. I like her food and it is a shame that she closes for the winter but if there is no custom with it being off the beaten track/bus routes and no one spending time on the beach park then it makes financial sense. I wish her every success in her new venture. You lot don't have to go. There are hundreds of other cafes serving up the dead (possibly horse who knows) . Those of us who want to avoid animal cruelty will frequent the place knowing that we are in the company of kind individuals who don't mock the afflicted. Soya milk is great . Cow milk is produced by the mother cow for its offspring whicht will have been killed (if male) and certainly removed from its mother , so that you can steal its milk. Compared to you Heather is an angel,

The only thing that I dislike about this story is that it is there. Apart from being a gold-digger who was once maried to someone famous I have no idea who this woman is, or why the Argus is giving her free advertising. It doesn't do that to anyone else who opens a restaurant, do they. I can understand if it's someone famous, even Dermot O'Leary but Mills?
Just as an aside, if veggie food is so great and meat is so evil why do you call veggie food after meat - veggie burger, veggie sausage, even veggie bacon sandwich ffs. I would have though that you would want to distance yourself from the evils of meat as far as possible. After all, I don't tuck into a steak and pretend it's a carnivore carrot!

No it isn't murder. Murder is the unlawful killing of one HUMAN by another HUMAN.
Killing animals for food is just that - but it isn't murder.
That's why no one takes you lot seriously. Using inaccurate language to make some ill conceived point.

Moving to East street seems to me to be a great business move on there part, at least there they can operate the menu they want to, after all in was the hotdog and chips brigade at the lagoon who insisted they adapte their menu to a version of cafe fry up food , instead of the well thought out good food/menus they started out with.
I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian
but i find it appalling that some people have left disparaging remarks on this issue , just because a person chooses to stand up for what they think is right or wrong , where are we living now, North Korea ?
Given the Sweeney Todd style issues regarding the burgers and ready meals you all seem so fond of,its about time we all started thinking more about where the meat is coming from,Horses today, god knows what animals it will be next !
