Shoreham's new footbridge on course for summer opening

A new footbridge is on course to open this summer.

In October the original Shoreham footbridge was closed over safety fears.

Before Christmas workers installed steel beams to support the concrete deck on either side of the new structure.

Over the next few months workers will install more small sections of concrete designed to gradually load the steel beams with weight.

Funding for the £9.8 million project has come from both West Sussex County Council and sustainable transport charity Sustrans.

The new bridge can be used by both pedestrians and cyclists.

More good news. Just need decent bike lane from Portslade to shoreham and there will be a reasonable route from shoreham harbour all the way to stanmer park.

i know that you can't stop progress but I shall be sad to see the old bridge disappear in the same way I miss the iron Norfolk Bridge. Both are part of my memories of growing up in Shoreham By Sea. I suppose some past townsmen felt the same when the footbridge replaced the ferry and the Norfolk Suspension Bridge was replaced. At least the Old Toll Bridge is still there.

I would have said Shoreham to Southwick is the bit that needs it the most. You can always hop over the lock at southwick and use basin road all the way to the start of the cycle lane at hove lagoon. Ok, not actually a cycle lane but no traffic and very safe by comparaion with the 259
