Crewman injures arm on ship off Shoreham coast

A crewman was airlifted to hospital following an accident on a ship off the Sussex coast.

The man began losing a lot of blood after crushing his arm while working on the ship 30 miles south of Shoreham.

The Shoreham RNLI lifeboat was launched at around 1.40pm today but later stood down when the Coastguard helicopter was used instead.

A Coastguard spokesman said: “He had started losing a lot of blood and we had to get medical advice on how to deal with the injury.

“In the end we applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding before getting him off the ship and to the hospital.”

The injured man, who is from the Philippines, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The ship was en-route to Southampton when the accident happened.
