Firefighters sandbagged the front doors of the homes of residents affected by floodwater.

Crews from Emsworth were called to Lumley Road after floodwater began lapping at the front doors of five homes in the street at 9.50pm last night in an operation that lasted two and a half hours.

Residents in Tudor Drive, Westergate on the opposite side of Chichester also required the assistance of firefighters as well as residents in Underdown Road, Southwick.

Flooding problems are persisting this morning with the A27 closed both ways closed between the Bognor Bridge Roundabout, Chichester and the Tangmere Roundabout due to flooding.

The A29 is closed both ways as well between the B2233 Nyton Road in Westergate and Rowan Way, Shripney.

Yesterday afternoon, the Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the River Ems at Westbourne after more than 20mm of rain fell in 24 hours.

The Government body said river levels in the Ems have started to rise leading to a risk of property flooding in Westbourne with any further rainfall over the next two days likely to see further rises.

There are also newly issued flood alerts on the River Uck, Ifield Brook, Upper River Mole, River Tillingham and Cuckmere River where flooding is possible.
