A gospel composer has won two Grammy awards.

Matt Redman, from Brighton, beat the cream of America’s deep south to pick up two of the prestigious gongs in Los Angeles on Sunday evening (February 10).

The song 10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord), written by Mr Redman and performed by him with Jonas Myrin was joint first in the Best Contemporary Christian Music Song Category.

The 38-year-old also won Best Gospel or Contemporary Christian Music Performance with the track.

Mr Redman and his wife Beth, who have five children, are members of St Peter’s Church in Brighton.

Mr Redman describes his music as “modern day hymns”.

He said: “I just play whatever comes out of my heart.

“That may be singing someone else’s song or it might be writing it myself.

“Just do whatever comes natural, be real and worship.

“I wouldn’t even say I’m a musician – first and foremost I’m a worship leader.

“Music is a great way of coming and engaging with God.”

World travel

In the last ten years the family have lived between America and Brighton, where the family have been involved in the Church of Christ the King, The Point in West Sussex as well as St Peter’s.

Mr Redman and his wife have written several books on Christian worship, including his latest book Mirror Ball about his thoughts and experiences of ‘living boldly and shining brightly for the glory of God’.

He has led worship since he was 20, which has taken him around the world.

His songs, which he writes with his wife, encourage people to worship God ‘through the storms of life’.

Declarations

Talking about two of his most recent songs, Mr Redman said: “Blessed Be Your Name is a declaration of something which we’ve both found to be true in the tough seasons of life.

“To worship God and trust Him no matter what will always be the best path.

“The song You Never Let Go takes up the same theme.

“It starts off with some thoughts from Psalm 23 and reminds us that no matter what we come across in life, there is a God who is in control.”

Adele, who owns a home in Western Esplanade, Portslade, also won the award for Best Pop Solo Performance for Set Fire to the Rain (live) at The Royal Albert Hall.
