New Rottingdean toilets go ‘gender neutral’
5:40pm Thursday 14th February 2013 in News By Tim Ridgway, Local government reporter
Unisex toilets are to be rebranded as gender neutral by “politically correct” council chiefs.
A £140,000 refurbishment of the facilities in Rottingdean seafront started this week.
But emails seen by The Argus indicate bosses “wish to promote the term gender neutral” when discussing the block that will be open to everyone regardless of their sex.
Supporters claim it will make it more accessible for those who do not identify with the male-female binary.
But ward councillor Lynda Hyde said: “This does seem to be a case of unnecessary bureaucracy and political correctness.
“If the male/female symbols, rather than any text, are to be used on the toilet then this avoids any confusion so why is the council muddying the waters by insisting they are called gender neutral, which will mean nothing to most people?
“The parish council, which is part funding this toilet, actually wanted to have separate male and female toilets, which would also have been my preference and, I suspect, the preference of most local residents.
“However, the city council in their wisdom, decided otherwise.”
Four toilets
Rottingdean Parish Council is contributing 60% (£84,000) of the total construction costs.
The rest, along with £16,100 additional fees and design charges, will be paid for by Brighton and Hove City Council.
The block, which will include four new toilets open every day of the year, will also include a café.
Work is due to be completed in 12 weeks.
Parish councillor Frank Considine said a sign will shortly be placed on the fencing around the site describing the toilets as gender neutral.
Standard image
An image of a male, female and child will also be fitted to the doors when complete.
It comes after the local authority carried out a scrutiny into making it fairer for trans people to live, work and socialise in Brighton and Hove.
The local authority provided no comment when asked about the use of ‘gender neutral’ rather than ‘unisex’.
Instead, a council spokeswoman said: “When producing signs for public toilets in the city we use standard images rather than words.
“This is particularly beneficial to the many tourists from overseas visiting our city.”

Interesting the Greens don't even listen to what the Parish Council wants, even though Rottingdean is paying 60% of the cost. Hardly surprising therefore that they never take any notice whatsoever of the views of ordinary local people.
Democracy / public service is a completely alien concept to this sad group of individuals whose sole purpose now seems to be trashing the city before they're turfed out.
The Greens would be better off asking why should young girls or even women be expected to go into a toilet alongside a group of men? What about their rights?

We've seen it before, with public toilets being re-labelled Men & Women rather than the conventional terms Ladies & Gentlemen, which benefits no-one, and in fact disadvantages non English speakers who may have little more than their guide books to follow.
There is nothing wrong with unisex toilets, if built to the appropriate standards, and they should be labelled with the internationally recognised pictograms. If you are going to use words as well, branding them as gender neutral, unisex or otherwise is completely pointless - let's just use the known and accepted terms 'Toilet' or 'W.C.'

I don't want to go into a toilet block at the same time as women or girls and I know many people will feel the same. This is an unsafe situation for women.

But then when you've got Councillor Duncan joking about rape, that it says it all really, doesn't it?

Those responsible for decisions that allow indecent exposure to happen more easily should also be prosecuted for whatever crime they're helping to facilitate?

It is now a clear fact that the marxist greens are all mentally ill, but do the council officers have to confirm that they are equally unwell. You could not make it up.

Not only is this a disgusting thing to do for obvious reasons eg rape , exposure, hygiene, dignity but where the hell does £140,000 come in to it buy a propety for that you thick pox council !!!
As if that wasn't bad enough, the Greens are now forcing their stupid gender ideas on Rottingdean which is meeting 60% of the cost of this building project anyway.

Noticed that commentary on this article has brought out some of our more narrow minded vitriol for the sake of vitriol spouting commentators though so at least it is doing its bit by letting them release some of the bile that must have been building up.

fredflintstone1 wrote:Your stats are woefully wrong. Intersex is 4% of live births (according to Dr Peter Koopman, University of Queensland Australia) and studies of Transgender people show that the numbers are actually between 6% and 10% of the population. That is a lot of people. Single-sex toilets aren't safe, single-sex assault and sexual assault happens, yes even in womens bathrooms, but Trans people are far more often victims than perpetrators (by lots). Want genuinely safe toilets? Make them one-user-at-a-time. Then it's safe, safe for everyone. And being unisex won't matter at all would it.
So at 1 hermaphrodite birth per 100,000 people, there are statistically 3 genuine transgender people in the whole city. Let's hope they don't all turn up at Rottingean at once.

You should apologise to fredflinstone1 for saying his figures were 'woefully wrong'. Even if the
4% transgender live births you quoted were right that clashes with the studies that you say show transgenders are really 6 - 10%. of the population. 4% can never be equal to 6% - let alone 10%.

The scandalous aspect of it all though is the fact the only way Rottingdean would obtain the toilets that are needed so desperately on the seafront is by having to contribute so much money. This despite the fact that it has been Brighton & Hove City Council who have done nothing to maintain the old toilets.
And the fact that the residents of Rottingdean in addition to paying an additional amount in Council Tax ( that is where funding is coming from ) pay the same amount as everyone else in the city. But have not received an appropriate level of investment and commitment.

What precisely do people think is going to happen in unisex toilets? Do people genuinely consider men to be so dangerous that they can't be near a peeing woman lest they attack her? Presumably the people condemning it here share bathrooms at home? May I ask how many times their husbands have leapt on them like flying squirrels at the merest hint of a tinkle?
And as for the commenter aghast that men may have to see Tampax machines or children, all I have to say is a) do you genuinely think men will have to get to a fainting couch if they're aware of menstruation? b) Not all women want or even like children, why should they have to put up with them but men don't? c) You are aware that men are parents too, yes?

Surely a mixed toilet is going to raise safety issues, particularly for women. Public toilets can be dodgy, and to have men and women in the same ones is going to raise the risk of attacks on women.
Also, exactly how many transgender people does Brighton actually have, the way the greens make out, they sound like a majority. But then again they are a bunch of lunatics.
Not wanting to sound sexist, but female friends and family members have all been against the idea.
Im always left stunned by the Greens latest idea, they've gone from ill informed to dangerous in a few years.
Still the transgender community and flasher community will be overjoyed at this development.
