Hove woman persuades Murdoch to reconsider page 3
Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch is to consider axing The Sun’s long-running Page 3 feature – because of the efforts of a 36-year-old from Hove.
Lucy Holmes posted a petition on the campaigning website Change.org in September last year.
Now, just six months down the line, she has 80,000 signatures calling for the end of topless pictures in the paper.
But perhaps her campaign’s greatest scoop came earlier this week when a speculative Tweet was sent to the newspaper’s owner – and one of the richest men in the world – Rupert Murdoch.
On February 10, campaigners messaged the tycoon: “#nomorepage3.
“Seriously, we are all so over page 3 - it is so last century!”
Like so many of their previous attempts they presumed their calls would fall on deaf ears.
But just minutes later the Australian responded: “page three so last century! You may be right, don’t know but considering.
“Perhaps halfway house with glamorous fashionistas.”
Lucy said: "We’re obviously happy that Rupert Murdoch is thinking about this issue – we’ve said from the start that this isn’t about legislation or censorship but about the top people at The Sun getting to grips with the outdated and sexist nature of Page 3.”
The writer and actor set up the No More Page 3 campaign in response to the dearth of sportswomen in the tabloids following the London Olympics.
In the months since, she has gathered support from across the world including famous faces such as Tony Blair’s right-hand man Alastair Campbell, singer Eliza Doolittle and comedian Jennifer Saunders.
In an open letter to The Sun’s editor, Dominic Mohan, she said: “George Alagiah doesn’t say, ‘And now let’s look at Courtney, 21, from Warrington’s, bare breasts,’ in the middle of the 6 o’clock news, does he, Dominic?
“And you shouldn’t show the naked breasts of young women in your widely read ‘family’ newspaper either.”
Page 3 has been a feature of the paper since November 1970.
Bosses at Change.org have said that 15,000 people have signed the petition since the Murdoch tweet, making it one of the most popular on the site.

I am normal and as a head teacher would be classed as quite intelligent, I read the Sun.

there are so many newspapers to choose from and people know what the sun has to offer, personally I do not buy it beacuse it seems to think that celebrities constitute news, a view I do not share but on the other hand if its been a feature for 42 yrs then surely that speaks volumes....remove it and paper sales will probably go down 80%.
If it offends you then dont buy it...simple
etimes i may buy it still for the football on a monday, its still one of the best for sport.Anyway can this women please get them to stop Pride. Now that really does offend me.

Judging by the way she fails to fill that tee shirt I think she is jealous! No one has to buy the Sun so why try to ban something which is optional!

Page 3 was a handy aid in this matter.
Do you want to return to Victoria values where even piano legs were covered?
It is bad enough with religious extremists trying to tell us what we can and can't do. I wish the Politically correct and feminists would use the very censorship rules they want to impose on us upon themselves and belt up!

I don't read the sun or care about page 3 but I really don't understand why someone would bother spending any effort on trying to remove it. I can't imagine anyone is forced to be on page 3 or forced to read it either. Surely there must be something more worthwhile to care about?.... They are only breasts.

Another typical "lovely" Brighton lass.
Urgh.
No cry from the feminists who claim they want equality over half naked men plastered all over women's gossip mags I see.
Or over nearly naked male models used to sell everything, everywhere. No, just a short-sighted focus on the 'me, me, me' issues. What a surprise. No outcry either during the run of the 'page 7 fella'. And net there'll be another whining, confused person calling themselves a 'feminist' complaining about how she 'can't' dress how she wants (ie, hardly any clothes, shoving it down our throats, even though she is just shopping at the local Tesco's).
Absolutely pathetic. Time we stopped giving in to the whims of messed up people just cause they 'claim' to be a feminist. Genuine feminism is a broad church with many different views. Why do we always pay attention only to the trivial, hypocritical extremes.....?!
