Hove residents evacuated from flat after fire fears

Residents were evacuated from their homes for more than three hours after smoke was seen pouring from their block of flats.

Hove firefighters evacuated 20 residents from the upper floors of a block of flats after a passer-by reported smoke coming from the pipes of the building in St Catherine’s Terrace, Hove at 7.45pm last night.

Following investigations, firefighters discovered that the smoke was being given off by a chemical which had been used to treat the toilets in the block.

Residents were eventually allowed back into their homes after 11pm.
