Pet food handouts from Patcham animal centre
6:30pm Saturday 16th February 2013 in News
Animal bosses are to hand out pet food to people struggling to find enough money to feed their cats and dogs.
Staff at the RSPCA centre in Patcham have been contacted several times in recent weeks by people forced to hand over their pets because they are having financial problems.
Now they are offering to help provide pet food for those who have suffered from changes to their benefits or who have recently lost their jobs.
They are also asking anyone who can donate animal food to the centre to contact them to try to prevent them running out of supplies.
Cheryl Wood from the RSPCA said: “It is a short-term offer for those who suddenly find themselves in crisis and are struggling to feed their animals.
“It may be those who have been caught up in the changes to the benefits system or those who have recently been made redundant and they haven’t managed to sort out their benefits yet.
“The idea is to give a temporary boost to people who are really struggling.
“Pets are obviously very important to people and having to give them up because they suddenly can’t afford to feed them is obviously a distressing position to be in.
“Many often feed their pets before themselves and end up going hungry.
“This way we may be able to help people keep their pets during a particularly difficult time until they manage to get back on their feet.
“We will try to be as flexible as possible and review the situation on a weekly basis.
"Each case will be assessed individually.”
The centre has been in talks with local organisations Brighton and Hove City Mission and the Gateway Centre, who will refer people who may need the extra help.
However, people can also contact the RSPCA directly.

My old moggie costs me £40 a month alone in vet bills due to a feline geriatic condition.
Add food bills to that you are looking at almost 60 quid a month.

Poor people shouldn't have pets. Only rich people should have pets.

It is appalling what is going on and something must be done to stop this.
It's time this rotten, corrupt government actually started making businesses trading in the UK pay their tax instead of leaving all the loop holes - cameron promised to do this before he was elected, but still hasn't - which would bring an end to the current austerity measures but the corrupt rich of this country don't want that. It is the rich of this country that have been and are ruining it and should be stopped.
There's a new party to vote for now - the NHA which is mainly run by doctors who are fed up with the NHS being ruined by this government (did you know that many MP's, ministers and our PM have financial interests in private health companies?) and this party also promises honesty and I for one am very angry at the disgusting way so many MP's continue to rip us off with their expenses.

This is all thanks to this disgusting government who is continuously making people who are on benefits live under a barrage of abuse and losing money to the point where people who are terminally ill are being found fit for work by the governments henchmen, ATOS (a French company that Labour brought in to test whether people are ill enough to be off work, but who have been given targets by the gov - that is illegal but they are continuing to do it) who frequently stop people's benefits completely and they are left with no hope. There have been many suicides because of this.

The issue here is people being selfish and stupid, having pets they clearly can't afford.
What a crazy world we live in and we would be all better off if people like you were not in it!.

If that is the case then this will only become more of an issue in the coming months.
