Public support is building for plans to convert a mothballed seafront complex into a water sports centre and café.

Sussex-based Strenson Investments says it has had more than 1,000 likes on Facebook and 25 letters of support its proposal to develop the former Mermaid Café site in Brighton Road, Lancing.

The father and son company says the new development would create 32 full-time and part-time jobs and so far, more than 200 people have put their names forward for roles.

A decision on the makeover of the long-term derelict site is to be made at a planning committee meeting on March 4.

Developer Alexander Hole said he was “hugely humbled” by the response of local people and thanked everyone for their response.

I used to windsurf here and it's still a good spot, but apart from the hardcore 20/30 regulars, this place is really quiet apart from the few summer weeks we get. Bad place to have any business, I suspect.

Actually this is not what it seems. The site that has been created to allow locals to have their say has apparently been 'regulated' in such a way that only positive views stay on there and the rest get deleted!
No mention in the above article of the proposed 3 bed Manager's apartment and 2 x 2 bed holiday apartments and where are all these people going to park? There's very little parking available in Lancing and, in the summer months especially, the little car park at Beach Green gets very full, very quickly.

1000 "likes"? That is how we gauge opinion now, is it?

How do we even know where random people who use facebook live? They could be anywhere in the world.

This ugly building is taller than the Planning Committee signed off & should be demolished.
Then start again

I have to disagree with the parking comment. Yes it IS busy in the summer (good for business!) but the parking on the local streets is free and unregulated and is just a short walk from the beach. (Try Chester Avenue and cut through the twitten!)

Having said that the building IS a shocking eyesore and personally I think knocking it down and starting again is the best bet.

Looks fantastic. Exactly what lancing needs. Really hope it gets going. Bring in some development to the area and cool to get some more windsurfers/kitesurf
ers involved.

Don't think the building is too bad, just needs to be done up.

Good luck.

It is a really ugly building and the plans don't show that they're going to improve the look of the place - pull it down and leave it down!
The other point to note - and this may not be known by those that don't live in Lancing - access to this site would mean going across land that actually belongs to Lancing residents, as set down in a Deed some years ago.
