Six-mile traffic jam hits south coast - caused by 'dangerous potholes'

Motorists have been stuck in a mammoth traffic jam - caused by dangerous potholes.

People have reported being stuck on the A259 South Coast Road for hours.

Peacehaven, Seaford and Newhaven are worst affected, with jams spreading as far back as Brighton.

An East Sussex County Council spokesman said: “We have been carrying out urgent works today on the A259 to fix dangerous potholes. We've seen a big increase in potholes following the severe weather that hit the county over Christmas and the New Year.

"We are sending out extra work gangs to fix the worst holes and have a programme of resurfacing works to improve roads across the county. We understand that roadworks can be frustrating for motorists but hope people will bear with us whilst this essential work is being carried out.”

We've soon got nine months of chaos to look forward to around the Seven Dials. For most of the rest of the year some of the roads will be closed at any time.

I agree with you Buri.its idiotic not allowing car drivers use the near empty bus lanes at a time of crisis.

BURIRAM, during these times yes cars should be able to use the bus lane, bus lanes should only be enforced during rush hours, nothing idiotic about that. it is more idiotic to have hundreds of cars stationary pumping out co2 and with people possibly late for hospital appointments etc. why oh why are these repairs not carried out through the night without any disruption, how much has this disruption caused the economy, idiotic highways policy.

I think the issue is that the roads haven't been maintained for years and are now simply being patched as a "band-aid" measure removing nature’s own traffic calming measures.

It's not a case of complaining, I have been stuck in these twice today, burnt probably 3 litres of diesel in the process, had to cancel one job because of the delays so lost about £80 -£100 and annoyed a customer. All you can do is try to earn a living despite the actions of the politicians who are supposed to keep the country running.
By the way tried the bike but with the ladders strapped to the luggage rack it was 3 meters wide, police objected….

The Lewes road is full of pot holes yet on the same stretch workmen are painting a new bus lane.
At least the council are using vital funds to give local drivers free driving lessons on how to drive Eco. I wonder if that will include how to avoid pot holes and how to drive Eco when you are a bus driver trundling up an down the route with a bendy bus with just ten people on it.

Why is Joshiman an idiot? I'd say his idea was a good one, if the bus lane was out of action the buses would use the other lane. The only idiot here is you Buriram!!!

Plain sailing at 06.40 on A259!
Avoiding the pot-holes at that time of the morning is a pleasure but wish West Sussex even bothered to identify their cavernous pot-holes for repair at some stage.
At least ESCC is doing something with the ear-marked funds received from HMG for road repair!

The A259 is a very busy road during the day time, at night not. You must fill in these holes but why not overnight.
Secondly, taking immediate action to fill in a hole that has been around for weeks is absurd. Who controls these outlaw gangers, Noddy ?

The potholes in Telscombe Cliffs Road
have got worse! Riding a motorcycle
or pushbike is lethal! Cars are getting damaged. Car tax has risen so why don't they use this to fix the problems?

I avoid that stretch of road like the plague because of the traffic that has built up since the bus lanes were put in.A real shame because there are some truly individual shops along there run by sole traders...
